Quote check on replacing a large hot water cylinder in my apartment?

Got the news a few minutes ago that my tank needs to be replaced. Plumber said it took a bang a long time ago, maybe during transport and the contractions over the years have created a leak near a join.

May i ask is there any way this can be fixed rather than replaced?
I got a quote for 1600 for tank/labor. Full days job.

Thanks.. Worst possible time for this! :(

First answer is no, not worth the effort or risk to attempt a repair. If it is rotting there, it is rotting elsewhere. You are going to have to change it.
Shop around for quotes, get at least two other recommend contractors to price it up for you.
Costs vary greatly due to size and how difficult it is to get the tank out. Some tanks are very straight forward, others require taking the hot press door frames out, damaging plasterwork and it all being re-instated, a much bigger and far more expensive job.
