Asus Zenpad hangs on logo screen. No boot menu.

I have been given a number of near new Asus Zenpad tablets.
Some of these have developed the same issue; on startup they hang as son as the logo appears on the screen with the timer symbol below it.
When I try to get into the boot menu (hold down power & volume up buttons) the device comes up with a bright green screen with a large Android symbol but no menu.
I found a post on different forum that advised to hold down the power button and the middle of the volume buttons but nothing happens when I do this.
To be honest I'm a bit lost at this stage so any help is welcome.

When you get to the screen with the Android on his back you usually need to press volume up once to get the bootloader menu.

You could try the pc approach, install adb drivers on your laptop and then run the command to reboot the tablet into bootloader or recovery. Failing that flash the stock rom or a custom one via adb.
