Cheapest car for a learner

    Hi all,

I "have" to learn how to drive. I would choose not to, but its a work thing.

My issue is that the insurance is insanely expensive, for every car I've had an interest in.

I'm 37, male and no driving experience.

Is there a car make/model that is a bit cheaper insurance wise?

I've looked up quotes for a 96 pt cruiser, and a 2007 Honda Civic. I couldn't get a quote for the cruiser and the only quote I could get for the civic was 4,200(!)

I need a car, and I need to pay a max of 2k a year insurance. Is this possible?

Anything approaching the 15 year old mark is going to give a high quote.
Honda's generally due to boy racers etc tend to be higher.

You can look at carzone.ie, get a reg then proceed to an online website that quotes and enter that reg.

I would ring up a broker, explain your situation and they will give you suitable advice.

Try a Yaris, Ford Fiesta, Renault Clio, Opal Corsa...etc.. Anything under 1.4ltr tends to be cheaper.

When checking insurance quotes put down 2 experienced drivers (with no penalty points etc) as named drivers. They can even be friends/colleagues once you have their permission. This almost always brings the insurance down. Liberty seem to be giving fairly low quotes at the moment.

Make sure the car is less than 15 years old, as some companies won't insure these cars.

Not sure if you'll get below 2K. It's gone very high in the last few years. I was a learner at 26yrs a couple of years ago and my insurance was €1600 on a Fiesta. Was half that once I had a year no claims and passed my test.

Also worth checking out Boxymo. They put a tracker in your car to see how you drive and you get "rewards" for driving safe. Usually is a lot cheaper than other companies.

In the same boat as yourself op ,
Stick to a 1liter car and build up some experience and try find something under 10 years old , cheapest quote ive got was 2000 for the year,

Don't be bothering with something you really like ,affordable and reliability is your keywords at the moment ,
