Normally for casual rounds it's not but for comps book away.

Not cheeky at all OP, for any type of round, casual or competition, it's one of the reasons for having a timesheet.

There will however occasionally be some minor grumblings like from the poster above, but no need to take any serious notice of them and just understand grumblings like these are from fuddy duddy types who will always find something to moan about, so make a note of their names and try to avoid them in the future, if for no other reason, than it makes for an easier life.

    Ouch!

My point was that if three lads are on the time sheet for a casual round, more than likely they won't want anyone jumping in. That's the reality whether you agree with or not.

It's in no way cheeky OP, for any kind of round, and it's the best way to get to know people in the club. I'm in a similar position in that I've recently joined a new club. I don't know a huge amount of people there so I join lines with two balls and three balls every week, in casual and competitive rounds and it's the only way to go.

Is it possible to join casual rounds through BRS?

No problem for comps for sure. For casual play some people may want to play by themselves and hit two balls per hole or work on their game.
Generally for casual play I d'ont put my name on the timesheet, just check when there will be a gap and play away.

Yeh every time sheet in our club casual or otherwise are done through BRS

Nothing more frustrating if I'm going for a casual game with my Father and either A) a guy way taking the game far too seriously joins us or B) a completely incompetent player joins us.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,761 ✭✭✭redzerdrog

I have played with friends that are only new to the game and very nervous about playing with others. Generally if playing a casual rounds with one of them I will just book out the full line so nobody will join us.
If playing a regular casual round I will just boom the couple of slots leaving the rest of the line free to however wants to play

Never joined or had anyone join me on a casual round via BRS, it would be fairly common for a single to join or offered tojoin a 2 ball though by the 1st tee if both waiting

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,730 ✭✭✭dan_ep82

I've never done it for a casual for fear of being a third wheel, if I'm a one ball I would always prefer to join a group though.

Comps I have no choice as I have no GUI holding friends and even then you get groups who don't want a third or fourth, which happened quite recently, and it can kill the fun of the round.

That seems to happen on ours only if a society has booked or if it is a greenfee

well people with that kind of attitude shouldn't play in club comps. they can have their buddys play with them but should also be open to let others play along

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,761 ✭✭✭redzerdrog

Might be a bit off topic but our time sheet is full pretty much 1 minute after it opens up. And if you are looking to book a full line you pretty much have 10 seconds to book it or have no chance.

I have heard somewhere before that there is some type of software which can book you in through BRS as soon as the time sheet opens. Anyone any idea about this?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 48,742 ✭✭✭✭Wichita Lineman

Go for it. I just hope you're not in the same club as some of the posters above.

If there is a free slot on the timesheet EVERYONE regardless of ability or handicap is entitled to put their name on it. Bad form for anyone who doesn't let someone join them.

Also I totally disagree with someone playing 2 balls if there is anyone playing behind them anyway.

You can't book casual rounds through BRS in my club.. I just usually turn up and go out when there's a gap.. Harder when theres a comp on.. you normally have to wait till its finished unless there's a bit of a gap.. But main comps are mainly Tues and Sat & Sun Mornings

I would never have an issue with someone out on their own some evening playing 2 balls. it would be rare to see that during any kind of busy period though. you will nearly always find they are going to still be quicker than a group coming behind or else they will most likely let them through.

Well i joined the club to get involved something as im new to the town .the opens dont start until next month and a lot of them are on days i work ..On our BRS there is a drop down for up to 4 names most of the are only 2 or 3 players .

that's what I do every week, always play with someone different. Do it enough times, you will get to know plenty of people and know who you like playing with and who to avoid!!

    best of luck

If its left open put your name down no problem. Anyone who doesn't want anyone joining them will book out the 4 slots even if only 2 or 3 are going to play.

one of the booking services in south africa allows non members to book the 3rd and 4th slots in the timesheet at a discounted rate. This is something of a niche to be investigated by BRS / golf now etc in Ireland.

all my local courses will have early saturday mornings 7-12 kept for members, fairly unhelpful pro shop employees too when you do call.

well there is a difference in trying to get out amongst members during their competition and for casual golf. what do you want the pro shop to do, allow non members out during members time???

yes if there are spare slots alongside 2 balls and 3 balls

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,761 ✭✭✭redzerdrog

    That would be ridiculous

    redzer says it well enough

clubs release the times they are happy to release to the public, yet you want more. if you want more... just join the club

It's simple enough during comp times any free slot is fine to sign into.
Late on a midweek afternoon guys are trying to get out for a quick 18 holes u maybe better off asking unless u are happy to play really quick golf and not be upset about a bit of banter and rushing around as is often the case at that time.
Get your handicap sign up for comps.
If the invites don't come for friendly games or to rejoin groups then :(.

I'm usually one of the first to throw my name down in comps and put it down on a line on its own, every time the slot will be filled up during comps. I'm new enough to the club and it's the best way to get to know people there.

I wouldn't go near a a single free slot on a Casual line I would feel like I am imposing on a group of friends. Though there has been times that I was asked if I would like to join them.

I think I agree with the broad idea that for competition timesheets, its pretty much a free for all and you can put your name down anywhere, no issues whatsoever. Its a great way for new members to get to know people.

For casual rounds (midweek, evening etc) I tend to think guys want to play with their mates and I'd feel like I was imposing on a pre arranged grouping. I guess I'm lucky in that in my club during midweek or in the evening time (apart from competitions) there are no timesheets and its pretty much just rock up and out you go. I don't think I've ever not got out on a summer evening when I've gone up for 6, 9, 12 holes or whatever. Usually you have the course almost to yourself anyway !!

You're point is a nonsense one and I don't agree with it, because in my experience of playing over 20+ years, I'd never leave a person on their own who wants to have a game of golf and join our group, be it casual or competition, it's good etiquette.

BTW if you don't want another person joining you (and that's your prerogative, albeit not a friendly or an inclusive one), you should make sure there are no few slots on the timesheet on your line.

IMO it's simple courtesy to accommodate anyone who wants to play, so any free slot equates to an invitation to join that line.

    I am a member of a club.

Last week the order was 3 ball 3 ball 4 ball 1 ball (hotel guest).

I was in the 4 ball and the 1 ball was obviously waiting on every drive and approach as well as joining us on the tee box on some holes.

    My blame goes to;

    1) the two 3 balls of bitter old men who didn't have the decency to ask him to join.
    2) the pro shop employee who couldn't use his common sense to match this hotel guest up with another 3 playing members in a stableford comp.

If there was a last minute type tee time website like I mentioned earlier in the thread, this situation would not have arose.

Wouldn't be in favour of putting a green fee out with members playing a comp.
If the course is full in front of the 1 ball then I'm sorry it will be a long day.
If I'm playing a comp I don't want some green fee that has no connection to the club wrecking my day.
When the course is busy you are as well off in a 4ball so always hope our line fills up on comp days but it will be with a member playing the course.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 981 ✭✭✭mighty magpie

Why is there the assumption that the green fee will wreck your day?

Chances are if he's willing to play on his own he'll know the rules/etiquette and be able to play a bit.

Chances. It's the reason we pay membership to play comps as organized by the club and have a course to play as and when we want.
I would never leave another competitor in a comp on his own even if it meant breaking up our 4 ball.
But no interest in playing with a random green fee.
