the factory kill everything as long as it's healthy. You'd see all kinds of stuff being offloaded. Mightn't get great money if they ain't properly fleshed though. They can be fair light and boney if they lambed and won't k .o great, I hear up to €3 a kg at moment.

Yes I know about that I've killed other sheep but I'm wondering about buying old hill ewes and killing them soon after their bought.
Only one way to find out I suppose

Killed a ewe that wouldn't out on any condition. Was a decent sized framed sheep and got 86 or something like that . was happy enough

I see ewes in a more hill mart about €30 give or take regularly, bound to kill for more than that? Say the smaller cast ewes about 50/60kg and kills 50%?

I'm no expert on sheep but I reckon the marts usually give the value of an animal . If there was a twist in them some dealer would have them in his trailer going home

Yes I know You mean, less dealers about this mart more a farmers mart, but a rougher looking pen of sheep wouldn't interest the farmer and might keep them down €5 a head

Not sure, think about how fleshed a 50/60 kg lamb is and your looking at a 45% k.o . Id guess 35 % , but at €30 a head its small money and worth a punt . I remember for years they were only Giving us €20-€30 in the marts for decent fleshed lowland sheep. They must have made good money then.

I bought old ewes with lambs at foot last spring in the mart...they reared the lambs and i killed the ewes in mid summer...ewes will put on weight after rearing lambs in summer without meal but won't in the backend...i had plenty of grass for them but u want to watch them they get into fat score 5 easy with lowland ones....its harder to judge a ewe i think...plus there was goodosh money for them last summer

I wonder will there be much of a change in how lads are going to be getting rid of ewes as a result of the welfare scheme?

You've a point there ganmo. Looking at my culls here, any wondering if they'll effect my numbers as the replacement ewe lambs won't apply.

Yea,you have to maintain numbers for the twelve months, but hoggets will do as replacements as far as I know

Hoggets will replace cull ewes as part of a turn over breeding flock with home bred hoggets.
