Cow lost a calf here just now. Say if we buy a suck for her, is it ok for the suck to drink the beastings or would the cow want to be milked dry first? The calf could be 2/3/4 weeks old

The beastings might scour the calf a bit but it won't do them any harm.

I heard this one recently but don't know if it works or even if its true. The guy telling me said it did but he's a great fella for a story.

He said he had lost a calf and bought a replacement off an older neighbour but was afraid the cow wouldn't take to the calf. The neighbour told him to get two cans of Guinness. Then he opened one and threw most of it all over the calf and the rest on the cows nose and mouth and the cow was fooled by the smell and started licking the calf.

He asked the neighbour what was the second can for and yer man said "that one is for me".

I know a lad who would get the knackery so skinnthe dead calf, tie the skin into new calf for a few days.

Sounds woeful but he said it's never failed to fool even the most vicious of his cows.

Often done it with a lamb, not a nice job but I try not to think about it; it also saves a lot of hassle. I'm sure the same principle works with calves.
Got the calf late yesterday evening. Put the cow in the crush and the calf went to work straight away and not a budge out of the cow. Seperaterd them last night and today, might put them together tomorrow in a tight pen and hope for the best. She's a quiet enough cow, I bought her as a springer but she was bucket rarer herself

Done it a few times here and it's always worked. Don't let the neighbors know or you'll be doing it for them aswell as I found out  Horrible but effective job.

Done it my self a few weeks ago. It works really well. You have to do it fast a day or two later generally is to late for it to work.
