Losing power and overheating

I have a 1.8 09 mondeo/diesel today while driving i began to lose power and the temperature started to rise until the point the car stalled while stalled the engine fan was working overtime to cool the engine, i checked the water level which was OK. i let the car cool until the fan stopped and it started fine and drove fine for about a 1/2 mile when the same happened again.
I know very little about engines so i googled the above and got various answers, i then rang my mechanic who said it could be the head gasket i know this is a relatively big job and while i do trust him i wanted to see would anyone else have a similar opinion.
He asked me to check one or two things for him as hes away for a few days.

Any white residue on the oil cap = NO
Fill water reservoir and see if any air bubbling out = yes

Car has 137,000.00 miles on it with timing belts changed at 99,000.00 miles

    Any help would be appreciated.

It is probably the head gasket. The car probably heat seized rather stalled. You will do,further damage if you continue to drive it.

If air is coming out of the coolant expansion vessel, that means its getting into the coolant system from somewhere; the coolant jackets run alongside the cylinders. Air is likely getting from the cylinders into the coolant, which means it's a matter of time before you start to see the classic 'mayonaisse oil'; if air is getting in, oil will get out. Sounds like head gasket alright, I wouldn't drive it either. It's likely to be a pretty big job alright; even investigating is a few hours.
