Engine stopped while driving

    Hi,

    My engine stopped last night while I was driving, I was coming up to a roundabout and started to break and the engine stopped, the battery light came on and I started the car it stopped again and the 3rd time I got it going. I was going to go and get a new battery but someone mentioned it could be the alternator???

    I only had my car serviced & nct'd.

    I don't want to sound like a smart-ass, but my crystal ball tells me the car broke down.

    It's not the alternator. The battery light went on because the engine stopped and alternator was not generating electricity, not the other way.
    I only had my car serviced & nct'd.

    They AGAIN forgot to cast the reliability spell... What are those people paid for?

    So you just decided to be as unhelpful as possible in your post... i see :D

    OP did it start with ease after it cut out or did it take some time to start? Any decent garage or friend with a multimeter should be able to test the battery for you.

    You are yet spreading false information... Multimetrer test (I assume voltage test) is not a good test of the battery. And if the car started, the battery is obviously not completely broken.

    One could test for voltage under load. A clamp meter could be used to check the charging current too. Multimeter? With a bit of skill you can test for leaking current with one, or check the charging voltage - but that's it...

    It's a 04 Volkswagen bora.
    I'd be almost certain it's the hose pipes that run from the engine to the brake servo. They are brittle and known to crack with the heat of the engine bay. The symptoms are exactly like you're described.
