Mortgage Protection Insurance for Smoker

Asking for a friend - he and his partner have mortgage protection on their mortgage taken out approximately 8 years ago. At the time he was a non-smoker and declared so, however in the intervening period he has taken up smoking (I know foolishly but just smokes socially, about 10 cigarettes per week), he is wondering if he should declare this to his insurance company in case (god forbid) of his unexpected death and the insurance company refusing to pay out on the policy.

He is slightly reluctant to declare his smoking status as in the intervening period he was diagnosed with cancer and subsequently recovered. He is 34 years old. Any advise on what to do would be appreciated.

If he told the truth when the policy was effected it shouldn't be an issue. Funnily enough his "non smoker rates" would also still apply.

p.s. Smoking with a history of cancer really is beyond silly.
