    Hi there,
Looking for opinions regarding membershio this year.
I have the following options due to finances:
    1) Castleknock as 5 day member @€;700 - This would a renewal of membership
    or
    2) Westmanstown as 7 day member @€;1000 as new member
Both are 10 minute drive from home.
With the 7 day membership I can get to play competitive golf at the weekends.

I am looking for opinions on Westmanstown regarding the course quality and ease of getting on the timesheets(as a single) on the weekends to play in competitions ?

    Thanks,
    Noel.

Interesting one. Course quality, there is no comparision, Castleknck is a different league. Westmanstown is very flat with some trees and a bit of water. It a few years since I played it, but I remember 2 things. I played really really well. Ridiculously well. Reason, it's not a very difficult course. And it wasn't very exciting.

If weekend golf is not a deal breaker, go with Castleknock, there are midweek comps there.

If you want weekend golf then Westmanstown is the easy option but I think there is far better options in that area for the same money. I personally am not a fan of the course at Westmanstown and would agree with SteveOB that it is a very simple course if hitting straight and you don't need to be long on it. But I am also not a fan of Castleknock as a course but do agree it's a far superior course to Westmanstown. I think I would look at other options and I believe that deal at Westmanstown is for the 1st year only.

Where do you live? If your near Lucan I would look at Lucan Golf Club.

I have been a 5 day member of castleknock for the past couple of years so know the quality of Castleknock course.
I was debating on 5 day v 7 day member and quaranteed golf at the weekends and not having to travel too far so hence just wanted to get some outside opinions on that..... so thanks for your thoughts.

well noelleee, I guess you know with the credit option in Castleknock, you do get a great deal and it's not wasted money if you don't play. Can you stump up the extra 750 and go for the full 7 day member credit option to get you out in the weekend comps?

I've not been a member in Castleknock for the last year, mainly because of family commitments but partially cause I was pissed off with their admin. Eg, Comps they didn't put up on BRS, the secret member website, not getting prizes I was due. I think in fairness to Carr golf, they seem to have put a bit of an effort in to shake things up and do intend to sign up again this year as a 5 day. The course has it's flaws and there are other options out there worth looking at, but convenience plays a big factor!!!!

@Ollieboy - living in Ongar so convenience of short drive to each is the good points on both.
I am a fan of Castleknock course.
I guess playing 5 day golf on a better quality course is better than playing than a simple course all the time.
I hear that trying to get out at weekends at comp times in Lucan can be painful. Need to be on the button with logon for timesheet to get decent time etc.

@Seve OB - the credit system is the added bonus if you dont play. Dont think I can stump up the extra 750(new 3 month in the family so want to set aside some extra monies for the rainy days :) ) - Did that the full 7 day credit option one year and got use of the weekend comps when I did.

I do agree with you regarding some of their admin especially with respect to 5 day members. Never seemed to have many specific 5 day comps and then comps like 5 day captain prize, they did not give too much notice.
Convenience is the big thing as being able to leg it over for even 9 holes with a 10 min drive only is major plus.

Just a thought for you as you live so close, and this is why I joined in the first place. If you want to get out of the house for a meal here and there, it is a great way to spend those credits and as I'm sure you know, they are a very family friendly restaurant so no probs bringing the nipper up. Also with a 3 month old, you may be considering a christening bash and you can use the credits for the party. I'm going to join again this year, and am strongly considering the 7 day option for these reasons despite the fact that I am already a full member in another club!

Thats the plus of the credit system alright. Being a cluchie, I am going to be doing the christening down home so credits wont be used on that bash :)

Thinking Castleknock is the way to go following the discussion here.

    Thanks all.

It's funny you think Lucan (im not a member of Lucan) is hard to get out on because I would have thought that you would have the exact same problem at Castleknock seen they sell most of the weekend time sheet for Societies and Green Fees. But to be honest, in all clubs you need to be quick to get your preferred slot and then you need to be flexible if you don't get it. I personally have always got my desired slot over the last 15 years at my club but maybe didn't get to play with certain people but that's what I mean by been flexible.

I lived in Clonee and more recently now in Dunboyne so I am very familiar with the courses in the area and I think you will find excellent value else where if you widen your search just a little. But then again, if you like the course at Castleknock then you will find it hard to change anyway so maybe you just want people to convince you to spend the extra on 7 days membership. Sure you can always try it for a year and then downgrade afterwards if you don't think it's good value or then try another club or try another club now and always go back if you don't like it, you have plenty of options.

Have to agree with this. It's the same in Greystones. I've often forgot to log on to book tee times but I've never not got a game when I really wanted to get out. Sometimes you have to be a bit flexible with your time preference alright, but generally you will get something in around what you want. We have a waiting list which will automatically book you in your preferred time slot if someone drops out.

How does the credit system work, I seen the unit break down but never seen how much credit you get with each membership offer

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,186 ✭✭✭✭Seve OB

    1 credit for each euro
They used to give a bonus if you bought a higher amount but don't think they do that any more

You should consider Grange Castle in that area too. Great course these days. Midweek and weekend comps.
