Bless me boards for I have sinned it has been too long since my last post. :D

Anyways ... I have a Canon 550D and it's giving me an Err 20 which I believe to be a mechanical fault. I've tried contacting a local crowd (I'm not in Ireland any longer though will be back in a few weeks). The local crowd told me they won't touch that model anymore as it's too old. So be it.

My options then are to send it back to Canon for repair. It was bought in 2011 so I presume I'm going to be spending 200 or so quid if I do get it repaired? Also I'll have to ship it to them at another I presume 20 or so quid. I'm wondering if it's worth it? Should I look at getting a new body instead? My budget isn't huge at the moment but if a repair is going to cost me 200 quid I feel like I should be looking to upgrade instead?

    Any advice welcome.

I would be doing some searching online to see what that error code means and that would give you a better idea of where you stand. It would also be interesting to see what price used 550D bodies are these days so you will know the relative costs comparison.

There are people who will do repairs like zerohamster, though he has not bee around here for a while.

I have just been through this with a 70-200 zoom with fungus. The repair was about half the replacement and similar to the cost of a used one.

Thanks for the reply. (I'm unfortunately no longer based in Ireland and I had looked at a few threads mentioning zerohamster on the forum).

To the best of my knowledge it's the shutter that's broken with the err 20. Not being able to do anything but get the err 20 is rather annoying with the camera (access any menus or anything else)

I've tried investigating a bit and to see if I could do it myself and I suspect I might try to repair it though I'll probably not do it any time soon. (need to pick up a replacement shutter box assembly if that's the case)

I've also checked on ebay / leboncoin (here) all over the at second hand 550Ds and they will set me back around 200 quid give or take 20 or 30 quid.

I've also taken a look at similar spec new budget cameras and the 100D looks to be much of a muchness (though obviously someone will probably rip apart that statement) - http://cameradecision.com/compare/Canon-EOS-100D-vs-Canon-EOS-550D

I've also looked at upgrade paths ... 600D ... 650D ... 700D and I'm currently taking a look at the 750D though opting towards the 760D due to the top LCD and extra dial. It's not really in the budget but if I'm going to fork out 200+ euro on a repair or on a second hand piece of equipment I'd probably prefer to go first hand and have it come with a warranty for a bit.

The danger when you get up early ...

I've gone and forked out on a new body ...

I've gone and purchased a shutter assembly on ebay to make a repair attempt on the 550D .. ( it'll take a few weeks to get here )

I now need to bill all of the people and hope they pay :o
