Hi I'm looking to buy a used car has to be petrol as I only do around 7 maybe 8k miles a year (mostly city driving) can anyone recommend a good fairly reliable car 1.4-1.6L? I don't have a huge budget though around €6k max.
    Thanks

If all city driving and low mileage why not hybrid/electric?

    ^^ as above.

If full electric scares you, or if you can't find one within budget (which is more likely), anything hybrid will be pretty much bullet-proof and easy to live with while not costing an arm and leg ot keep on the road. I've tried a good few of them myself and I'd advise the civic hybrid in your budget, you should find a nice example with relatively low mileage.

I had a diesel before nothing but trouble due to the low mileage I do, it's a 1.4 tsi highline 122bhp, it's actually 100k miles not kms is that very high for a petrol car?

The 1.4 TSi models can suffer from stretching timing chains so listen out for rattle noises from the engine.

Thanks will do, if I like it I will be bringing it to my mechanic to check it over first, do you know any other cars 1.4-1.6 that would have a small bit of power, I know you won't get much from a 1.4 1.6 though

How do these hybrids hold up over time, do batteries wear out etc

Not much else Passat size with small capacity engines. A Mazda 6 1.8 litre petrol would be a good choice or if you're open to something a little bit smaller, the Honda Civic 1.8 litre saloon.

Nissan Qashqai 1.6 petrol. Good performance, economical, reliable. 2007-10 models.

The worst I've heard of personally was some cells of the battery needing replacing (which is actually not that big of a deal even though main stealers will advise replacing the whole thing for a few K€), and that was past 500.000 miles, on one particular prius.

Other than that, they're pretty much bomb-proof and are some of the most reliable drivetrains ever manufactured on a large scale (be it Toyota HSD or Honda IME).

I haven't heard of other hybrid a lot, so can't really say, but I don't see any reason why it would be less reliable than "traditional" drivetrains.

Was going to suggest a 1.4tsi Passat but didn't think it would fall into your budget. I have one (2011 B7) and it is a brilliant car. I test drove a 520D recently and the Passat was almost as quite and the engine smoother. The 2008 may be slightly less refined. As mentioned timing chain can be an issue, mine started rattling at 80k and was replaced under VW goodwill. Other than that is has been 100% reliable, engine is smooth and the car is faster than you would expect. Economy is good at 7l/100km with a mix of city/motorway.

Do you have a link to the car?

Full VW service history is a big plus. I'd be phoning VW with the reg to see if it checks out, and to see if the chain has been replaced. If done under warranty it may not be in the printed service history. HL spec is very good, heated leather seats a plus. I'd also be bringing the car to an independent mechanic before doing the deal.

    Nice car.
