    Hi there

Anyone make their own coleslaw, I was trying to make it with white cabbage, onion and carrot and mix in mayonnaise. It has quite an oniony flavour. Does anyone make their own coleslaw and if so could you share your recipe, I would like to make as a dish for a get together.

I've never put onion in coleslaw. Just white or red cabbage with carrots and mayo.

Try using red onion instead of yellow, it's much milder.

Also the juice of a lemon will keep your coleslaw fresh for a few days, add a bit of honey to counteract the bitterness.

I can't stand mayonnaise, I make mine with a mix of yoghurt, orange juice, red wine vinegar and a pinch of cayenne. No onion either, just cabbage and carrot.

I love an oniony coleslaw myself. You could taste as you go. So make it with what looks to be the right quantities then add more carrot and cabbage as required.

You can rinse white onions to make them milder for eating raw, I do it for burgers. I guess it would work with coleslaw too. You can leave them soak a while to get even more "onion sting" out of them.

I do that too. I slice onions and sprinkle them with a little vinegar or lemon juice - anything a bit acid does a great job in only a few minutes.

    I normally make it with
    1/2 head of cabbage
2 medium carrots - dry as much as possible with kitchen towel
2 fine slices of onion very finely diced (or 1/2 scallion or some chives)
Dressing - half mayo , half creme fraiche, dash of lemon and half teaspoon of dijon mustard

Also nice to use red cabbage add some dried cranberries and swop the dijon for some sweet chilli in the dressing

Yes, but not regularly. I like a rainbow slaw :)

Always make my own. And I do add onion, very finely sliced with a mandoline.
Also carrots, celery, apple, white cabbage, a few sultanas and hazelnuts, a squeeze of lemon juice, mayo or creme fraiche, or a mixture of the two. Season with sea salt and black pepper.
