Is it just me or do the majority of drivers use this roundabout incorrectly?

EG coming from city centre direction and continuing straight on Navan Road you should be in the left lane and then signal left after you pass the first exit on the left?

however most motorists seem to be in the right lane (which i assume is only to be used if turning right at the roundabout (3rd exit) .... i guess this is because the road divides into two lanes right before the roundabout and there is two lanes at the exit too

Right lane is perfectly acceptable for going straight on at 12 oclock. It's the recommended lane to do so. the left lane is also acceptable .

I'm not disputing this I was just told the left lane is the recommended lane to go straight at a roundabout. Can you provide into as to where it says the right lane is recommended?

yeah same here i thought the left lane was the one to be in for turning left or going straight.... although in this case there is a two lane exit straight ahead so it looks like thats why its ok to use either

if there are two lanes and two lanes out of the roundabout you can use either to go straight ahead.

Let's say you come to a roundabout that you have never seen before and you can't see the other side because there are trees on it but it has two lanes as you pull on to it. Would you agree you should always enter the roundabout in the left lane (unless road markings say otherwise?)

If i was doing my test again i would definitely be in the left lane. But if i was just driving then i wouldnt say it is an absolute. If there is only one lane after the roundabout it is usually signposted.

    Hi,

Suppose you enter in the right hand lane. Now lets assume a car has entered in the left lane at 9 o'clock and is exiting at 3 o'clock, both of you arrive at 12'oclock at the same time, who has the right of way ?

You do. the car entering at 9 o'clock should yield to you because you are to their right.

You do. the car entering at 9 o'clock should yield to you because you are to their right.

Therefore you can always exit with complete impunity from the inside lane of a roundabout ? all traffic must yield as they are to your left

If either lane 'had' to be used for one direction or the other, there would be big arrows on the road, so both can be used for straight on, as there is no right hand only arrow in the right hand lane.

all traffic to your left must yield. that is how roundabouts work. it doesnt matter if you are in the left lane or the right lane approaching the roundabout you have right of way over all traffic to your left. Not sure why this is so surprising.

    Hi,

    as per ROTR
Going straight ahead (or any exit to the left of 12 o'clock)

Approach in the left-hand lane (unless road markings say otherwise) but do not indicate 'left' until you have passed the exit before the one you intend to take. Where traffic conditions dictate otherwise, for example a long line of traffic in the left lane signalling left or road works in the left lane, you may follow the course shown by the red line.

When leaving the roundabout take extra care at all exits, checking for other road users - for example, cyclists and motorcyclists who may be continuing on the roundabout.

Therefore you stay left. However no problem whatsoever if left lane is blocked, you use the right lane.

Two reasons you do not take the right hand lane if the left is clear

One. When exiting, any traffic in the left (outside) lane has priority over you and
Two. You should not change lanes unnecessary

At the exit traffic already in the left lane have priority to take either the left or right hand lane, also to drive past, take the next exit.

The same rules regarding lane changing apply to roundabouts as they do to everywhere else, dual carriageways, motorways etc etc.

    From ROTR
    Changing traffic lanes

Don't move from one traffic lane to another without good reason.

You must give way to traffic already in the lane into which you are moving.

If there are two lanes and two lanes out then the following diagram illustrates what lane you should be in.

    Hi,

So simple, only gets complicated, and dangerous, when people try and apply their own mistaken made-up rules.

    Like:

Special rules apply when following the main road through a roundabout.
    (All roads are equal)

And normal lane changing rules are for some strange reason suspended. (To exit from the inner lane on a roundabout is almost the same as exiting directly from the right hand lane on a dual carriageway or motorway).
