    Hi All,

Looking to buy a cheap run around for herself and have found two 05 Ford Fiestas in local garages for handy money, one is a 1.2 and the other a 1.4! Is there much difference between the two engines and is one a better buy then the other? The two cars a pretty much identical otherwise! Both less then 100,000 miles

The 1.25 is the one to get in my opinion. The 1.4 only gets 5bhp more than the 1.2 (78vs73) so isn't worth the extra tax and hassle come resale time.

On such an old car you may as well buy privately if your options are restricted to dealer cars you're probably ruling out some peaches.

watch out for the 1.3 model too. They're an ancient clattery old thing. Sellers often try to sell them as 1.2. They're generally ultra basic spec too.

The 1.4 litre engine is from the Focus and is a bit pointless in the Fiesta. As Colm says, it's not that much more powerful than the 1.25 litre yet costs a bit more to tax and can be harder to sell on afterwards. Most 1.4 versions were sold in Ghia trim which really doesn't offer much over the Steel model which the majority are the 1.25 litre. The 1.25 litre engine is a nice engine, co-designed between Ford and Yamaha. Steel is the best trim level too though the 16" tyres can be a little more pricy.

No. The 1.4 litre engine in the Fiesta mentioned by the O.P. is not the same as that in the Focus. It has a slightly higher power output of 82 b.h.p. and is a much better performer than the 1.2. Also featured in the Ford Fusion up to 2007.

It's the same 1.4 engine as in the Mk2 Focus (80PS/78bhp)

It's not. The mark 2 focus engine is a 79 b.h.p. unit which was used up until 2010. The 1.4 Fiesta/Fusion (82b.h.p.) engine was discontinued in 2006.

I know this isn't really benefitting the OP, but have you any source for that, just for my own curiosity

Well, I am open to correction of course but as I understand it the engine line up for the Fiesta has been :
    1996 - 2002, 1.25L (75b.h.p.) and 1.3L (60bhp).
    2002 - 2006 1.25L (75b.h.p.) and 1.4L (82b.h.p.). The latter also powered the Fusion before being discontinued in 2006.
The 1.4L (79b.h.p.) - a different engine - first featured in the Mk2 Focus (05) and subsequently the Fusion (07 onwards).
The earlier versions of the current model Fiesta (09) also feature a 1.25 but with a increased power output of 82b.h.p., identical to the obsolete 1.4 I've been referring to.
I hope you didn't fall asleep reading this post!
