For print journalists, it means they provide news reports or feature articles to a number of different media outlets in return for payment (per story).

For example: if there is a court case, one journalist might provide copy to six National newspapers. Newspapers often prefer to use a reliable freelance instead of having one of their staff reporters sitting in a court room for days when he/she could be covering a number of other stories. It also cuts down on accommodation and travel expenses.

The journalist, Alison O'Connor is a example of a freelance journalist, she has a weekly column with the Irish Examiner, she fills in occasionally on TV for Vincent Browne and is a regular panellist on current affairs radio shows on RTÉ and Newstalk.
