eFlow VAT removed but charge remains the same

As of 1st April 2017 VAT is no longer being charged on eFlow tolls. This is due to the Court of Justice of the European Union ruling that Revenue should not be charging a tax on top of a tax.

Any VAT registered businesses used to be able to claim this 23% VAT back.

However, with the change the price of tolls remain the same. So that was a pointless ruling if Revenue just turns around and keeps the charge the same. In fact, we're paying more. :(

My understanding of it was that eflow themselves absorbed the vat. They weren't charging VAT originally, revenue directed them that they had to, so eflow paid the VAT. While the toll price stayed the same, the amount Eflow got to keep was reduced when they decided to absorb the cost.

I'm quite glad they did. Instead of the toll being 3.10 it would have been 3.50 or so and would now be going back to 3.10.

It would be interesting to see some statistics on the number of motors paying tolls over the past years. If it's increased substantially then this may be an unjustifiable price hike. They were clearly making enough money even by absorbing the VAT. So it has to be asked, are we paying too much for tolls? This is a tax to upkeep and develop the motorway - not a cash cow for another company being the middle man for the government.

Not going to happen. You've infinite pressure on the government to increase spending on everything from housing to nurses to SNAs. You've finite resources (tax revenue).

It's hard for a government to cut a service when cuts need to be made, it's a lot harder for them to cut a tax, in lieu of increasing the number of SNA's for children with a learning disability when the money is there for it

Revenue gets the same fee. It's Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) pocketing the VAT saving which they previously absorbed.

Eflow tolls include vat @23%. My monthly bill always shows the vat separately and I have to pay it.
