Advice on dog found who is now in pound

Hello, i recently found a little terrier lost outside a shopping center running between cars, i brought it to the vet, she was unchipped and not spayed, the owner never came forward the vet speculated it was travellers dog. The travellers, if it even is their dog, don't seem to care touch about it. Is it better off in the pound?

I'm very tempted to either bring it back to the travellers. Simply because i don't know her chances of survival the pound. I can't take her myself as i live at home, parents don't want one, also i have a cat. Any advice, i feel like a basically murdered the dog for taking it to the vet, she was
as tired, scared and dirty when i found her

Which pound was it? Some of them work with rescues so the dog would stand a chance of being taken out & rehomed after the 5 days.

Please don't give the dog back to the travellers. You don't know for sure if that's where they came from & dogs can have it pretty rough with that particular community.

There are various dog rescue centres around the country that maybe be able to help you rehome the dog.
Even though most of them are over whelmed with rescue dogs, they will never turn an animal away.

Terriers are one of the easiest dogs to rehome because they are small. You can always phone the pound after the five day mandatory period, or ask if they would phone you before any decision is made to euthanise, if that was being considered.

Pounds don't just kill all dogs that are brought in. Many of them make great efforts to rehome by using Facebook, volunteer helpers, and allowing rescues to take them. Don't worry, she'll probably be fine.

Well done for picking her up, she probably would have been killed or injured otherwise, at least she will receive basic care in the pound and be safe from harm.

The vet seemed to suggest she would be put down, it was Ashton pound too. Ashton pound said to the vet they can't give details over the phone, i rang them and they said the dog wasn't there them rang then to ask where the dog was who then rang Ashton pound and had share time getting answers about it, but she's there anyway, i was told if I'm going to go in and get the dog i have to act like i never seen it before, so strange...

Seemed like a very docile dog anyhow so hopefully it is adopted, I'm going to go in i think and ask them to ring me if worse comes to worse, but I have a feeling they won't bother.

Have you directly contacted any actual rescue centres? There are tons around...

Personally I'd hold onto the dog until I'd found a space there and not use the pound.

I would have, however when i brought the dog in, the vet kept it for one day with the impression it would be given back to me, next a day they rang and told me legally they had to give it to the pound, which i found out later that wasn't true from the same vet, it's all been very annoying as i would have kept it in the first place and brought it to rescue or for someone looking to adopt. But anyway, right now it's in the pound so i have to make do i guess

It true, and it isn't true. Now that the dog has gone to the pound, it can legally be rehomed after 5 days, if you want to adopt it, go and get it from the pound after the 5 days, if a rescue or someone else hasn't already adopted it, then you probably can.

If the dog hadn't gone to the pound, and you had kept it, then you wouldn't legally own the dog for 366 days, and if an owner had turned up in that time, you would have to give it back, so if you'd kept it and found it a new family, they could have lost their new dog 6 or 7 months down the line.

If this dog was lost or stolen, the owners would be looking in the pound, so if people don't inform the pound at least, then how do people find their lost dogs?

Please, please don't go and adopt the dog from the pound, then take it a travellers site. That would not be the best outcome for the dog, and you could then end up in trouble when it strays again, as you would be the legal owner on the pound's records.

Ahh ok, look fair play to you OP for even bringing the dog to the vet in the first place most people walk on by!
