Installed new Samsung SSD EVO. Is performance correct?

So I installed a new Samsung EVO 500 GB SSD into my HP desktop. If I am honest it was quite a messy process due to the awkward way I went about it.

Can someone please tell me if these results that were ran in Samsung Magician software are correct.

Shouldn't the random read / write not be higher?

Did you perhaps image an old OS and leave AHCI off?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 508 ✭✭✭DarraghR

I cloned from my HDD then deleted the HDD once I set the new SSD to boot. AHCI was enabled when I checked the boot menu.

Should I do a clean install of Windows 10 through Windows recovery?

Thats a random 850 Evo 250 from teh interwebs.

You're very low on the write. The first thing to do is try TRIMing (Defrag and Optimize Drives on Win10,8). That impacts writes not reads.

"try advanced optimization on magician." Tried that

I will be doing a clean install of Windows 10 today and going through Reset PC. Everything is backed up but is there anything else I should do during the process? Is windows Recovery and a clean install the best option

Is "Reset this PC" a clean install, or does it back up old stuff? If I were you I'd just download the W10 USB Creation tool and do a brand new, fully clean install.

Reset this PC copies itself from its own Day0 copy of itself. As such it probably will not include the hardware evaluation steps a vanilla W10 image would. Cant be sure there, but I suspect so.

For the sake of saving your own time I'd use the media creation tool.

It may be worth pointing out that in the OP that looks like an old version of Magician from 2014, which may be testing / reporting speeds differently.

It was current until a few months ago (if I was pushed the update promptly).

Should be fine for the older series he's on.

Is it connected to a SATA 3Gb/s port instead of a SATA 6Gb/s port by mistake?

    New results after updating Magician

    Snap_2017-03-28_at_17.38.11.png

No I am pretty sure it is in a SATA III

If I create a Windows 10 disk with the media creation tool am I guaranteed it will not ask for a Windows 10 Key?
Should I not do a Windows 8 recovery then upgrade?

If you installed and activated in your current system there is no need for a key during installation, just select "I don't have a key" when prompted.
Windows will activate as soon as you're online.

Windows 10 will activate with no problem, the licence is tied to the hardware in the pc

Thats with RAPID enabled, its RAM caching the test.

Here are my results after formatting my SSD and reinstalling Windows 10 from scratch

    image.jpg

Any ideas why the speeds are still so low? The speed difference is insane compared to my HDD but I would like to get the most out of it ...

    Run that, then the test.

Installing Windows will have done lots of writing, you want to clear out the garbage before testing write performance.

I optimized but no change. There is not an option to do a refrag

On top of my SSD speed issue an old problem has popped up. Any time a boot up a game it instantly crashes. Belwo is a link to my post from February

as mentioned in my earlier post samsung magician has tool to optimize drive it basically does defrag thats meant for ssd,not sure do windows even 10 support that function.

That said do you have under device manager >Intel sata ahci controller drivers installed.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 508 ✭✭✭DarraghR

Ah I already did that. Is any old information stored on my motherboard. Maybe I need to reset my BIOS?

    Windows 10 Pro.

For what it's worth, I just ran this tool on both my Samsung 960 SSDs.

    250Gb was Read/Write; 2,649/1,377
    500Gb was Read/Write; 3,403/1,849

How do those numbers stack up?

    Thanks.

    D.

Ps. Nothing (apart from Startup items) was running at the same time.

Turn off rapid, those numbers mean nothing.

    I'm running Magician 5.0.0 / Windows 10 Pro x64

On the front page of Magician it says, "Rapid Mode - Not Supported".

So, I presume those performance numbers are without the input of Rapid Mode.

Drives are being optimized automatically, weekly.

    Thanks.

    D.
