Installing insulated plasterboard

I'm renovating my old family home and as its a terraced house and cost wise I'm looking to put insulated backed plasterboard on top of what is already there.
Now the house was built in the early 70's so all that is on the parts where I'm insulating is plasterboard-wire mesh-small bit of fiberglass insulation-more wire mesh and skim coat and dashing.
What would be the best way to tackle this. Can I put the insulated backed plasterboard on to the plasterboard with pink grip etc as there is nothing behind the original plasterboard to use the mushroom fixings. My gut is to rip it all out and batton it and earthwool then the insulated backed plasterboard.
    Any ideas would be great.
