Any of these in Ireland? Going to the continent to import one in the next week or two.
I know there are a few in the UK but not heard of any here yet.

Nah, the nearest we got was the Audi A2.

Do your homework re parts availability and insurance on a 3l.

lol i've seen a few of them over here. Why would insurance be a problem on a 1.2 3 cylinder diesel lupo ?

LHD could be an issue, I have a trade policy so should be fine.

As for parts they should be easy enough to get, although may take slightly longer to arrive.

Where are the ones you know of?

I thought this was going to be about some mental 3 LITRE lupo, not a 41bhp super efficient little thing that I googled. The motors forum disappoints this morning.

Your googling skills need improvement, 61bhp.
    You try running a 3litre 1000 miles/month.

I googled lupo 3l. I'd never heard of it so read the 3l as a 3 litre displacement not a consumption. I don't know you or your driving circumstances bud and my googling abilities are perfectly fine thanks.

The '3L' was a special edition.

    No, it's a Lupo 3L.
    3L being 3litres per 100kms or roughly 90mpg

Obviously not as its 61bhp not 41 like your googling returned :D

    Touché.

Edit Wikipedia tells me it is limited to 41bhp when in eco mode. I knew I'd read 41 bhp somewhere!

    Touché.

    Ah the 3L is misleading.
There's a myth that Renault caught wind of VW coming up with a 3L Lupo and not to be outdone they came up with the v6 Clio.
They made the same 3L mistake :D

Because they're not a model we got over here, they're LHD, and use some expensive parts.

Is it really worth it for 61bhp?

    45 kw = 61 bhp

3 cars for sale in Germany on mobile.de.GmbH

    Green 59860 km €3800

    Red 70200 km €4950

    Silver. 97857 km €3650

Is this the lupo that clarkson did a loop of the m25 to see how high an mpg he could get in petrol v diesel?

Seems to be a pile of them on there, emailed about a red on that went up yesterday near Munich for €2,290, its in a dealer. Looks very clean. They seem to be cheaper in Poland, €1,500ish but a Polish friend reckons they're very fond of clocking over there.

Not sure but I wouldn't think so, prob a 1.4tdi.
A lad did a test of near 2,500kms around Europe when they came out first. Think the whole spin cost something like €91.

I can see why you'd want one with that kind of consumption but would 1000 miles a week be tough going in such a small and low powered machine?

From all accounts they have no bother on the motorway. They weigh 1/3 less than your average 90bhp mk4 Golf.
90bhp Golf is 71bhp/tonne, the Lupo is 76bhp/tonne.
Some lunatic even put the 1.2 engine into an Audi A8.

Just did a quick check on a Polish site and they seem to go frrom 1k euro up to 1.5k.
I'd advise rather to buy from Germany though, exporting a car frrom Germany is piss easy and doesn't cost much but quite a bit of waiting is needed on the day you go to do it.
Not sure how it works in Poland but here are two at both ends of the scale:

Yeh I looked into the whole process in Germany. A dealer can organise export plates and all paperwork for about €100. I'd hope to have most of that sorted before flying over.
Polish option is just a matter of handing over the money and driving away.

Be aware of further insurance complications if the car is over 15 years old.
It will certainly limit who will insure you.

A Citroen C 4 diesel 1.6 will easily approach 4 ltr per 100 km, with a bit of drafting and definitely do 4.22 l/100 km or 67 mpg at 110 kph and they can be bought for buttons here. So is a theoretical saving of 1 litre per 100 worth the hassle ?

Agreed. In test conditions it'll do 90mpg but in reality what will it actually do? Accounting for that, which must equal at least a loss of 20mpg on the claimed mpg , is it worth the bother? I'd be very surprised if the numbers worked.

In test conditions it'll do over 110mpg. Real world owners reckon they can't get below 75-80 at 110kph motorway.
Do a bit of research instead of doubting and pulling figures out of no where.

This thread was already tidied up over people giving unwanted opinions. I didn't ask anyone if it was worth the bother.

Suspect the last part was aimed at me.
I was merely querying if the financials of bringing it over were worth it. It seems it is so gave advice.
Re the red one in munich, maybe try and find one with a bit of spec. Elect windows and maybe Aircon if you can find it .
It would make it easier to sell in the future in my opinion.
Have you done an insurance quote to see what figures you're looking at?

No it was aimed at the person I replied to.
I wouldn't be too worried about spec, condition and maintenance would be more important for me. Besides they go up a nice bit in money once you start adding in the extras. I want to stick to 2-2.5k
I probably won't sell it, be a cool little car to have and I don't see my commute changing for the foreseeable future with all the work being in Dublin and I wouldn't live there if you paid me.
I have a trade policy so insurance is fine.

@Noel yes lights will need changing.

What's the gearbox like on those? Did they use it in any other cars? Not a fan of automated manual gearboxes usually.

It's an automated manual alright. Supposed to be finicky around town but ok on motorway.
99% of my driving is motorway so I can live with it.
Manual conversions are possible but I need to do more research.
Auto is part of the attraction for me so i'd only go manual the auto is awful.

Only in these and the a2 1.2tdi afaik

Take a look at these 3, relatively on the budget you stated but with some extras thrown in - AC and heated seats:

The last one is in Munich if that's where you are intending on flying to.

Personally I'd go for the 2004 model, the newest, has the highest spec and you might get cheaper VRT (only a guess).

Yeh that 2004 looks good. I don't know what the Germans are like to haggle.
Only catch is I dunno would a private seller organise the export paperwork.
The extras would be nice if they came in under budget.

They aren't very fond of haggling, it being Germany it didn't surprise me.
I don't see why the private seller wouldn't help as they would be needed in order to de-register the car in Germany (a bit like in Italy) so they would be with you cause if you drove off with their number plate they are liable for any fines.
Do you speak German? Or have you got the possibilty to bring a German speaker with you?

No German i'm afraid, I have enough French to get by but that isn't any use in this situation!
No German speakers who could tag along as far as I know.
    I'll keep looking anyway.

Most Germans only love to show off their English so you could well be fine.
