Stiff gear change

My 07 Berlingo with 251k kms has a stiff gear change. The van hasn't been driven much at all for the last year or so. There is no grinding and it goes into all gears without problem, other than it just feels very stiff when moving the gear stick. Likely causes?

Seems to be loosening up a bit now. Could be the movement of changing gears or maybe the slight rise in temperatures?

Could the wrong type or low level of gear oil cause this?

Gear box oil doesn't go down unless you have a crack in the gearbox housing and if its starting to loosen after driving it a bit then its definitely not gear oil. I'd imagine the linkage would need to be lubricated as it could have become a bit dried out if the van hasn't been used much.

Check the gear oil anyway and if it hasn'tbeen changed recently drain it and fill with new. Won't do any harm anyway. Drain it straight away after having driven it for a bit and make sure it's completely drained before filling again

The wrong type of gear oil can indeed cause this

Had this on a Citreon van - something to do with water getting into gear cables and rusting them. Got so bad in the finish that pulling with 2 hands wouldn't move the gear stick! Got them changed and it's fine since.
