Crib halt, you put it on the navel it's like vaseline and very bitter so they shouldn't go near the navel again.

    Does it work?

Do you have to put it on every day?

Other than isolating the culprit with the heifer calves not sure what to do

Grind a few tablespoons of Epsom salts in a pestle and mortar then add a tablespoon of vaseline or a drizzle of cooking oil. Apply the mix to the tips of the hair around the navel during the day when it has dried off. You could use Stockholm tar but it is more severe.
Calves sucking each others navels is not normally a problem and they generally grow out of it but you need to keep an eye on any that have or develop a rupture.
After feeding cmr I go into the pens and replenish the meal feeders with calf pencils as the noise of the nuts (normally) distracts them from navel/ear/other body parts sucking.

not sure of this but I was told there is a garlic lick u can give to calves and when calves lick this, it will result in a taste of garlic on the navel which calves don't like so they won't suck the navel.

It works for us anyway, you shouldn't need to put it on everyday, maybe once a week but make sure to cover the navel fully and a bit around it, also put it on every calf in the pen, once the calf that's sucking gets a taste of it they'll be reluctant to do so again.
