Near miss?

Hi, I'm not an aviation buff but something happened today I though odd.
I was on Ryanair FR7243 from Malta to Dublin and about 90 minutes or so out from Dublin a small twin engined jet shot passed on the right/starboard side going the other direction. It was banking at the time so I could see the underneath of the jet and I would estimate it as being maybe 500 metres away. Very close.
Would this be a normal occurrence?
    Thanks.

It was most likely at least 1000 ft under/over you so no near miss.

Actually no, it was right beside us, I was in the window seat but my partner in the middle seat saw it as it passed by.

Dusty207, you will find that Gaoth Laidir is spot on. Also, you can use the playback feature on flightradar 24.com and watch your flight back.

Best I can tell it was a Citation C525 at FL410 2,000ft above you, nothing else comes close as you passed by the east of Paris.

It's extremely difficult to estimate distance and even relative altitude when you're in a plane with nothing there to give perspective. Many times I've seen a similar situation but it's always turned out to be totally normal.

How far back in history does the Flightradar24 playback go? Would I be able to see a flight last January? Had a similar 'WTF?' moment on a flight to Malaga.

    Go outside.
    Look straight up.
    Measure 1000ft.
Let us know how you get on.

MOD NOTE I'd be happier if we were not quite so dismissive of someones experience. Not every one has significant aviation experience

Thanks for your reasonable reply, I was just wondering, case closed :)

    I was not been dismissive.
If someone tells me 2 cars are x distance apart I think they are a genius.
If however they give me a measuring tape and ask me to work out how far the cars are apart then I am on the way to becoming a genius.

By challenging the op to see for themselves how difficult it is to measure distance vertically then they can see for themselves that their initial assumption may have been incorrect.

I remember a 747 passing 1000 ft below on a flight to Dublin a while back. Even knowing the distance it still looked extremely close. Especially to the nervous passengers on the right looking at it speeding towards us.

if you think about it, 1000 ft is just around 328 meters and that's roughly how far the mound on the old airport road is from runway center line..

I was able to replay the flight that the OP was on, but how do you show other flights in the vicinity?

Replay the time period not the flight, takes longer to match though.

You're spot on, I googled the Citation and it was a white and blue version, nice looking aircraft. From what you say I was wrong about it banking, it was just being above that gave me that impression.
In reply to another poster about my perception, my estimate of 500 metres is 1640 feet so I wasn't too far out but I'm not claiming to be a genius since I know the true distance would be a bit more. Pythagoras I'm not!
