Have a two year old jack Russell . She's very good with people and very friendly when visitors come to the house tail wagging away etc. The problem is as soon as someone gets up to leave she goes stir crazy barking madly, whining , jumping up and running around like she's panicking. How can I get her to stop this?

so whats the underlying cause of this behaviour?
something has caused her to associate someone getting up to leave, with this behaviour.

Do you mean LITERALLY when someone GETS UP OFF CHAIR to leave, or is it more collecting in the hall, opening the front door etc?

If this is happening every time someone goes - she has gotten into the habit of behaving like this. You have to break a habit. When she started doing this, you probably all laughed, made a fuss, gave her attention, or whatever. Then the next time she did it again, same effect.

So, I would try something like this: get a visitor to come and sit down. Then get up to leave. When the dog gets over-excited, both of you turn your backs on her, and say nothing. IGNORE her completely. If this works, when the person leaves, give her a treat and praise. Get the person to come back in again, start again. Anyone time anyone leaves and the dog shows signs of over-excitement, EVERYONE has to ignore her, do not react, turn your backs to her, and hopefully she'll get the idea.

I would look to find out what started this behaviour though. Did she get a fright once when someone got up to go? Trod on her tail/paw or somehting? Dropped something on the floor beside her? Finding out what caused the behaviour to start is helpful in breaking the learned behaviour/reaction
