Saab 9-3 gauges sticking

Have an 05 1.8 9-3. So far I've managed to diy any niggily bits most recent being a broken cog in the air re circ motor.

Anyways I've an intermittent problem with the gauges both speedo and temperature.

Both seem to get stuck in that the speedo could be at 50 when the car isn't moving and the temp gauge would show nearly in the red. Just had the thermostat and coolant temp sensor replaced and the engine is grand, running at a normal temp.

If I turn the car off the needle might drop to just above 45 degrees instead of the off position.

A quick disconnect and re connect of the battery sorts the issue out but am wondering what the issue is and am looking for a permanent fix.

    Cheers in advance

I've never heard of this issue before

So the problem appears to be at a central location (all dials) and electrical rather than mechanical (battery reset fixes it)
But if the dials doesn't go to rest when you switch off car it points to mechanical.

    Interesting..

I'd imagine its an earth problem with the gauge cluster. How to resolve it though is another problem. If it were me I'd try and source a speedo cluster from a crashed car and see if the fault is with the cluster or the wiring to the cluster.
