BTEA and Summer Job

Currently on BTEA, in 1st year, and have the option of a job during the summer

If I was to take this job, would I still be able to get BTEA when I return to college next September? The job is at home and the college is away from home so I haven't the option of keeping it during term and the BTEA is the only way I'd be able to afford to attend college

Would I need to be on JSA for the summer the qualify for BTEA in September?

    Thanks for any help

You will need to come off BTEA and go on Jobseekers for a day in order to requalify.

The only issue with BTEA is that it is a non statutory scheme, so you find different practices amongst different places, with no accountability. In one area of Ireland your rate will be 'locked in' for the duration of the course, but in others it will be effectively means tested, despite not being a means tested payment. In a nutshell, you may not be back on the same rate for the next year of college that you were this year. Very likely it could be lower, meaning overall it wasn't worth your while working during summer.

Best bet is to do out your questions and deal directly with the Intreo centre in your area.

Knew I'd have to ask them at some stage, just not sure if I'll get the right answer when what im asking is in essence "am I better off on the dole than getting a job"

    Thanks for your help

If it is going to mean a reduced rate for your next academic year, or even worse that you won't requalify (rare, so don't worry), then think to yourself is it worth it. Maybe it is, maybe it isn't. Depends on how much you can earn during summer.

I think get all the information you need, and work it from there. If it was any other area of welfare you could get a good steer here, but as it is BTEA, you need to work it out locally as the practice varies. There is a case ongoing that Citizens information are involved in to try sort this out, so we will see where that goes in time, but it's a non statutory scheme and that's what facilitates it.
