Delighted for Mark who is in our club. He has been flying in training over the last few weeks so good to see him get the gold.

Amazing athlete, knocking out sub 2's for fun on a regular basis, at 45.

What does a weekly training schedule look like for your middle distance guys?

When are the qualifiers for this in Ireland? Is there a list of standards needed for the AAI to select you?

There's no qualification standards. You need to be a member of a club and Masters Ireland

Anyone can run. However obviously to be the best in the world, you need to be at a very high standard, in any discipline or age.

Ireland has a significant number of outstanding masters athletes.

I wouldn't call a 1:57 winning time for a M35 800 world class. Anyone know if Bernard Lagat was there? You'd imagine he'd sweep the thing

it shouldn't be world class, its masters FFS.

Anthony Whiteman won the 040 800m two years ago in 1.50. He was 43 yrs old. Incidentally mark O'Shea was 3rd in that race, in 1.57.

You try running a 1'50 for 800m when you are 43, or even 1'57......

Incidentally Kelly McNeely at the same event ran a 2.06 800m, for Ireland, which was comparable with some the seniors at the European Championships.

    Incidentally.

Times will not be as good in Daegu as they would say in the same event in Europe.

And participation tends to be quite light at 035 compared to older age groups.

I see the M55 3000m in Daegu was won in 9.09.

    Some going.

Do you mean an M45 record? Masters' to me implies anyone over 40. Just curious.

It just said masters but I assume it's m45 and not m35

Coghlan should have the over 40s record if it was measured on route to his mile races when 40 and 41.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,825 ✭✭✭IvoryTower

Yes that is correct, mark has set indoor record for 800 and 1500 in m45 this year, coughlan has m40

Thats a phenomenal run by Mark in the 1500m - thats his optimal race, cant imagine it could go any better.

The 800m he should be doing that time in his sleep, took a bit of a risk leaving it so late.
