Premium for buying from dealer v private

I had another thread going about buying an e60, good input from users and I'm thankful for it.

I have settled on 1 of 3 cars, 1 is in an independent dealership the other 2 are private. All have been checked by my mechanic and all check out fine.

I am pretty indifferent to each one so how much would you pay in a dealership over and above the amount you could take either of the private cars for? Assume all things are equal (pretty damn close to be honest) and no car was the outright favourite among them.

Talking about 4k for each of the private sales.

Id save the 4k and get the engine checked out completely timing chain etc.

Im in no doubt this is a 520D ;)

Your not going to get much of a warranty from a dealer on a car that age, possibly 3-6 months max and it will be pretty much engine and gearbox, I wouldn't be prepared to pay more than €500 for this peace of mind.

I'd give the private sales a good going over, drive them at motorway speed and listen for any odd noise or handling issues. Check that the AC is fully working, if it's not working you could be looking at big money if a new compressor is required.

They have been well checked by a guy I trust and always served me well using him over last 10 years. No issue there.

500 is the figure I had in my head myself for gearbox/engine warranty for a few months. Plus a service and a full valet.

    Bit of elaboration then.

Your curious retention of information doesnt really provide much clarity on what value a warranty would have.

I didn't retain info. Check out my other thread I referenced I went through everything. And I said I am looking at 4k e60s on this thread. It's about dealer premium, that's all. I'm going to buy one of them this week. Other posters were constructive you just had a wild dig and got caught out.

Sorry mate, you a wildly wrong. You referenced no thread. Saying other thread doesnt mean you referenced a thread. Put in the reference then i could actually respond correctly.

Its on you if you took the 520D comment as a dig. Get some tougher skin if you think thats a dig.

I suggest you go with Dealer as you cant handle some questions on a forum you certainly cant deal with a private sale.

    Good luck

I have met with all 3 sellers and got on great. Happy to buy any of them did my research and checks. I don't need thicker skin as I'm not getting a 520d so it's not me you were having a dig at.

I wouldn't buy from a dealer like that. He got that car for much cheaper, for a reason. And have skills and means to hide any possible issues much better...

    €0

Chance of benefiting from whatever warranty is slim, chance of needing to is also slim :)

Go with whatever car you prefer. I wouldn't place any value on the dealer side of things.

That being said if the car in he dealer was a nicer model with better spec then I'd pay the extra - but only to get a nicer car. :)

Good luck with whatever you buy!

    Not much in it.

The one on adverts.ie in Athlone, he will take €4K, start at €3800 and go up to €4K but you've got to be in front of him with the cash. Is the check engine light on or is it just because it's not started? If it is on that's a different ball game. EDIT: now I read the comments he is taking €4K. New tyres and brakes... this could be best value of the 3.

Rockfield Cars colour combo... hmmm... certainly different from run of the mill stuff and I really like it for that.... forget about the 3 month warranty adding any value. Not keen on 19", crashy ride and expensive tyres.

The one in Kilkenny has clean interior but is that a scuff on rear bumper? Exclude if it is a scuff.

Good luck and enjoy it whatever you get.

Are you serious? It is 11 years-old-car, it has every right to have a scratch on a PLASTIC bumper. I definitely would not skip it because of minor flaw like that.

I would pick the first one, lower mileage and also seems to be the only one with a sunroof, nicer interior than the dealers.
Also seems like he is negotiable with price and the car has had recently had brakes changed. Just my 2 cents.

Been for sale for over 6 months seemingly - swap for tourag, landcruiser ml navara - but also "Didn't want to but now have to have a new a5 so no room"

Nicest of the three IMO, pricey though

That one has been on sale for a year he turned down lots of offers above what looking for it now. It's a very nice car it just leads me to believe these things are not selling unless rock bottom price.

I agree with you on which is the nicest but I also agree with you on the fact its pricey considering the others don't sell.

Like here's another one, lower mileage, cheaper than all I have linked and up for sale a while.

Only thing is it is silver with black interior, same as what I have at the moment and definitely fancy a change

Might have a look at this over weekend then pull the trigger on something on 1st April. Not buying with only a few days left in the month for motor tax reasons although the pricey dealer car does have tax until 30th April.

have you had a chat with the dealer?

Bought it. 4500 Euro. Probably did want to get it for 4000 but we met half way so happy enough.

It's a 3 year car for me hopefully so the 500 won't make a huge difference. It's a little bit different colour scheme than the others in its a bit rare, so that's what I paid the premium for.

Yeah I think so too. Mechanically they were all equal, I.e. pretty much bang on but just being a bit different to the norm appealed to me, even if it is just a bit of colour.

Also have 2 viewings of the e39 today a guy reckons he will take it for 1500 if it's as described, which it is. Kinda sad to let it go it's been great.

First thing I would do is to check/replace oil separator, cheap and easy. It will get rid of oil loss.

Thanks Carpentry, I have a good guy looks after them for me ex main dealer mechanic he knows them inside out. He had it hooked up to a diagnostic and inspected everything. I'll mention that to him anyway.

That thing is getting clocked up very easily and sometimes it makes hard to identify oil loss. Mechanics usually start to look elsewhere, more expensive fixes.

    Smashing car btw.
