Anybody got any tips for catching cows in heat. We have 5 at the moment that we're looking to get in calf. Buying a bull isn't an option unfortunately. Have been trying to watch them but it's proving tricky. Any ideas people?

Paint the tops of tails and watch it regularly, when they are in heat they will rise eachother and rub off the paint
You might be better off over on the farming forum

You need a "teaser". Buy a weanling bull and have him vasectomised (rather than squeezed). He will act like a full bull but won't get them in calf (as you wouldn't want due to him not being of known pedigree). When you see cows standing for him they are in heat so you can get AI over to inseminate. You can fatten him then and sell him when they are all in calf, should make a few bob on him also.

You only posted it there 15mins before here! F & F only gets active really in the evenings. You can paint their tails, use blister patches or stand with them 20mins or so every morning & evening watching to see if they're 'acting up'.
Make sure you check their tails every day too because there's usually clear mucus on them if they're in heat.
If you were to vasectomise a bull from the mart you'd definitely lose any chance of a profit for keeping him for the summer, especially when a bullock will pick them up almost as well! Still wouldn't advise buying in stock as they could bring in disease unless you're happy to take the risk, but if you've any male over 3/4 months he should pick them up anyway.

Yeah I was warned before that buying in a squeezed bull is dangerous as they tend to be very aggressive. A neighbor of ours has two good quality bulls, is it possible to allow one of them to meet our cows for a couple of weeks to do the business?

Technically you're not supposed to move an animal off your land at all without a permit......but cattle do escape at times and you mightn't be able to safely get them back for a week or so:P

just the kind of answer I was hoping to hear. Some people say you can't stop a bull if he wants to get through a fence!! Better buy a good single malt and pay him a visit at the weekend :D

A squeezed bull is just a normal bullock and are usually tame. A vasectomised bull is a full bull that can't impregnate cows so will have the same temperament as a bull some will be aggressive others will be quiet obviously you don't trust any life stock though regardless of what they are.

Its easy to do the above officially also, its just a form you need to fill notifying of the move to your farm and then back again after the few weeks.

Wrong forum completely op... You may go to the thread on Farming and Forestry for any further help, and please don't open the same thread across forum again :)
