We have adopted a two year old border collie a couple of weeks back. The dog is a lovely little thing and is as well behaved as you could ask ... came from a loving home.

However, he is destroying my garden ... at every opportunity he is digging and the whole back garden is pot holed now .. really am not looking forward to cutting the grass.

It can't be from boredom as he will do the same when he is out in the fields or beach.

Any one have any advise as to how to get him to stop ?

Fencing is your friend. ie limiting the damage.. My wee JRT /bassett cross is at it too and having a whale of a time. When I had a collie, yep, she was a digger. A positive miner!

The garden here ( rental)is thankfully informal and neg lected but am going to have to invest in a roll of chicken wire to keep her off the beds. So far just the wild grassy part.

They seem to smell interesting things

Wondering if anyone has had any luck with this with a sand pit?

Set up a dig box for the dog where you can hide treats / toys etc to encourage the dog to dig there. You are going to have to be out with the dog at all times he is out for a while as well to redirect his attention to the dig box anytime he starts digging elsewhere.

Collies are high energy working dogs. They need to be occupied. Someone here has suggested one of those balls that bounces back when hit?

Mine was a car chaser; makes sense when you think as they are good at rounding moving things up.

Just so much sheer energy so anything to occupy them. And yes it is partly boredom.
