Asked to do training days for free

I started a job last year; it's freelance casual (but specialised) work that I do in my own time, about 3-5 days per month. When I was first offered the position I was told I had to attend 3 days training, and I wasn't paid for it. I wasn't too pleased, but thought perhaps I had misunderstood that part of the interview, and I was only new, so I did the days without complaining. Now, a year later, I am told that all the 'casual workers' need to do this 3 days training every year. I emailed to see if it's paid this time, and I was told it isn't. I'm not impressed to say the least. To the best of my knowledge, it's not legal for them to insist I do this for free. It certainly isn't if I'm an employee, but as I'm not exactly an employee, the situation might be different. Anyone know?

(They also take about 2 months to pay expenses, which bugs me, as I often have hotel bills and high mileage to the tune of 2000 euro built up by the time they pay me. I suspect this isn't legal either. Grrr. Other than that, the work is fine!)
