Moving to San Jose 2017

    Hi everyone.

Thinking of moving to San Jose on a graduate visa in summer 2017. Any information on what areas to look for accommodation, rent prices etc would be very helpful.
How does it compare to San Francisco re living costs and job prospects?
I'm a law graduate - BA, LLB and will be looking for an entry level job/internship.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Rents in San Jose are cheaper than in San Francisco, but still insane. You might want to play around with www.zillow.com until you get a general feel for the average rent level in different areas. If you can manage living further away, it gets a lot cheaper. (For reference I live in Santa Clara and pay about $3,500 per month in rent for a 2BR apartment.)
Affordable prices in San Jose, or anywhere in the Bay area, means either living in seriously dodgy areas or living outside the city and commute.

Craigslist seems to be popular if you want short term rents or flatmates.

    Thank for the reply.
I see what you're saying. Affording accommodation would be a major issue for the first 2/3 months. Our savings are slim enough and theres just three of us heading over together.
We're thinking that San Diego might be a good alternative, it seems a little bit cheaper. Not sure what the jobs market is like though. Legal work without the Bar exam passed might be difficult to find anywhere....

Thanks again for the information. Appreciate it!

San Jose is part of the South Bay area urban sprawl.

    Try using Craigslist for rents:

The Bay area is paradise but unless you have quite deep pockets I can't see you pulling it off as a law graduate. Have you considered going outside CA?

Regrettably I think we're going to avoid the Bay Area.

At the moment were looking at San Diego? Do you know if it's a similar situation re affordability down there?

    Thanks for the reply!

San Diego would be much more affordable than SF and it has better weather and LA is 2 hrs drive away.
