Is this cost effective? Will it cause cancellations of specialist appointments for people with other conditions?

I heard today of cancer surgeries being delayed, seems it's across the board. These are bad times.

Ohhh right, I didn't expect these negative posts.. Bit disappointing. Anyway just seems like a particularly nasty 'disease' affecting not a lot of children! And by all means can be easily rectified...

My post wasn't negative I hope the issue is resolved.

I don't think the delays with surgeries are limited to this disease though by the sounds of it, I think there are going to be many more things highlighted down the line. The system needs a revamp in general. It's unfortunate and ridiculous that some many people are simply left dangling on lists.

I wasn't being negative but trying to be realistic. The department of health has hundreds of groups of parents vying for attention / funding because their children suffer from a specific illness / condition. Their budget is finite and the service provided reflects that.

The whole system is a shambles, years of management incompentacy, no desire to improve as that would mean staffing changes and unions wouldn't allow that.

How many TDs have private health insurance for themselves and their families? Is there a single TD who is at the mercy of our public health system? There's your answer, right there.

Yes, they should be seen sooner, and so should lots of other patients, and I can't understand why the waiting lists have become so long when we're a supposedly well off country again. You're right to say this, OP. It's not good that a lot of us are just accepting it as normal now.

It is pretty common to be fair. About 3%

And it can't really be treated well in very young kids. Surgery is very complicated and requires a specialist team which there aren't many of in Ireland

I have recently been diagnosed with adult scoliosis. It's a very nasty and life-limiting complaint, and I've huge sympathy for kids who are born with it. Not nice. That said, I'm loathe to blame doctors, nurses, civil servants or politicians.

Once you get into the system the treatment in Ireland is world class. It's the difficult in changing broken organizational processes that makes it seem like such a mess. We live in a world of analytics, automation and collaboration. Our health service still seems to be stuck in an era of paper, a health board ethos, and a failure to want to root out deep inefficiencies for fear of annoying the unions.

I'd be surprised if many had it. I assume they would have little problem getting an appointment particularly if they do the whole 'do you know who I am' routine.
