    Hi there,

So I am starting an internship for 6 months as part of my college course. I wont be starting for another 2-3 weeks and I have holidays booked for the start of June. How do I go about broaching this?

Do I contact my HR intern liason by email now and let her know or what till I start and say it to my manager?

If I do say it by email, how do I phrase it?

    Hi HR person,

I want to make an enquiry about booking a week off to go on Holidays in June. I said I would send you an email to see if it is possible to get the time off? Or would I need to wait until I start in (workplace) to book any time off.

    Regards, etc.

It all depends on what their set up is. They have no obligation to give you the time off as you wont have worked there long enough to have accrued a weeks holidays. I am presuming it was never asked in the interview if you had anything booked? I would ring whoever your point of contact has been so far and ask them how best to go about it.

It's generally 20 days hols per year if I'm not mistaken so for six months it's 10 days it's roughly 3.3 days hols that will be due to you for your 2 months of work if you taking hols on the first Monday of June it's also a bank holiday .

When you start the job just inform them you had your hols booked a few months ago and there are the dates. I wouldn't worry to much just give them the courtesy of informing them well in advance .

I think this place is 24 days per year. As an intern, I dont think they will need me desperately. They also have flexi-time in operation so Id say they are lenient enough.

So if I do get time off, it will be unpaid as I wont have accrued holiday hours yet. It wasnt asked in the interview. Would an email do is it a bit unprofessional? Its quite hard to get in contact with the HR person on the phone. They are always out of office.

So that means you are due 4 days paid hols if you start working at the end of March up until the 1st of june. So if technically you will get paid for 4 off of you hols . Most companies will pay you your holiday pay and anything that's owed will be cleared by the time you have completed your contract . Don't worry too much about it !!! Everyone takes hols so HR expect things like this so when you arrive tell who ever you will be reporting to that you have a week's hols book in June and that will be all that's required. If you get a work email a gentle reminder of hols works too ....

Ah no I think you should be fine. Technically they could make you take unpaid leave for the 2 days you wont have accrued but it's unlikely. Most places would be ally more relaxed than this about accrued holidays and they should let u take the time and he paid.
