    hi folks,
I have a question in relation to a new car 172 driving to France. We are booked on a ferry got 4th of July. If I picked up a new Car 1st July. Would I have all I need to be able to drive in France? I might not have the vehicle registration cert or tax disc (they would come the following week I reckon) Would it be ok to travel with a car or would it be a problem? Can you get temporary documentation which would meet any legal requirements if stopped on the road?
    Thanks,
    Mick

Moved out from an old thread.

On topic, if you don't have tax and VRC with you and get stopped for some reason it may of course be a problem.
How will you prove car is yours?
    Compulsory Documents
Driving Licence, Passport, Car Insurance Policy, V5 Document (Log Book). The MOT certificate is also compulsory to carry if your car requires one. If your car is less than 3 years old then it will not require an MOT certificate and older classic status cars are also exempt.

Thanks for the reply - does that mean its not an option? Is there temporary documentation I can get to cover the legal side of things? The car should be available early June or maybe even late May.. so could the garage pre reg and have the cert and all ready to go for july 1st? the other option is to register the car earlier as 171 and have the documentation in order.

    Cheers,
    Mick

Ask the dealer, maybe you can get paperwork handled earlier.

You won't have any trouble when driving without tax disc.

However carrying your registration cert (logbook) with you is a legal requirement when abroad and if pulled over without having it chances that your vehicle will be seized are IMO close to 100% so it's definitely not something I would try to do myself.

I can't help with process of obtaining logbook earlier but if car is meant to be 172 so can't be regisiteref before 1st July then I doubt there's any option for logbook to arrive before 4th.

Thanks - its not meant to be 172, just a few people have suggested that if its arriving in June then it might be as well hold off on pickup till July to get a 172 plate for value purposes. I'm not to pushed about it to be honest so I think i'll collect the car as soon as its in. There's probably pro's and cons to it.. i'll have a 171 car with less mileage than a 172 with more mileage...

Ditto, tax disc means nothing on the Continent.

The tax disc is not a problem as the tax issue is country specific. The registration cert is a different matter. I have travelled to and through France at least once a year for the last 15 or 20 years. I have been stopped probably 3 or 4 times and have always been asked for insurance cert and registration cert. Each time the certs were checked again the reg. no.

Could you collect it after you get back.
I'd say you're best talking to your dealer to see.
If they're happy to hold off registering until the 1St of July, perhaps they'd have no issue doing it when you get back.

But OP needs the car to drive it for his holidays.

I assumed he currently has a car at the moment and was suggesting he use that instead.

If he doesn't, well then that ends my suggestion
