From Cork but will be travelling to Belfast. Where is a good and relatively cheap spot to stay overnight preferably still in Euro currency that's fairly near Belfast. When I say near wouldn't matter if its still an hour south of it. Don't want to be going off the main road too much if possible. Basically want to drive 3/4s of the way one day. Then the second day carry on to Belfast (probably spend 2 hours on the job I have to do there) and then return to Cork that day as well.

Suggest Drogheda, nice town. Used it myself once on that trip. Used Hotel D.

The Carrickdale Hotel on the border (ROI side).

Exit 20 off the M1 motorway for Carrickcarnon. Just north of Dundalk and south of Newry.

Rooms probably about €60 or so

    Or a hotel in dundalk.

Travelled from kenmare to Drogheda today.

Took about 4.5 hours. Dundalk is on 25 mins further.

It's only about 4 hours of a drive...would you just not tip on into belfast and stay there?

Failing that what about Dundalk? There's a crowne plaza on the ring road around it.

Lord Edward in Kildare was handy for us when we did similar trip last year. Broke the journey up nicely. We actually stayed there on return journey but hindsight says the way you plan on doing it would've been far better.
Wasn't too far off the beaten track if iI recall correctly, nice food too.
Highly likely they'll be cheaper to book directly than going through a booking site.

Drogheda is a nicer town, if you are tipping around in the evening.

I wont have much of an evening realistically. It could well be 4 o clock before leaving Cork. So will be night time already before anyway near the border. Just couldn't do the whole trip up and down in the day. If would be handy to be up early the next morning and be in Belfast for 10 or 11ish get my business done and come home again. There isn't any real leisure to this trip.

I suppose the most important thing is that the village/place I'm staying is still taking Euro like if I wanted anything in a shop etc.

Would you not just use the card?

I could do that too but just always a bit apprehensive of them not working in a place with different currency or something going wrong. I'm just weird that way. Always like to have cash instead

I'd stay in Drogheda, bit further south than you're looking for but I'd be happier there than in dundalk or further north. Just my 2c

It's only around 4.5 hour drive is be inclined to just drove up the particularly if leaving Cork late afternoon early evening you'll miss the worst of the traffic in Dublin. I'd stop off for dinner in liffey valley or blanchardstown.

Failing that you'll be in Belfast from Dublin in 2 hours. Price a room in the Clarion in Blanch or that one off the m1 at balbriggan. Leave at 7 in Belfast for 9 the traffic might be a bit rough heading into the city at that time though.

I'd stay in the City North hotel as well (as iwillhtfu said), about halfway between Drogheda and the airport. Straight off the motorway and (obviously) straight back on in the morning. About an hour and 15 mins to Belfast.
