Refurb - 2 HDMI cables from each TV point to AV centre

I know someone who recently had their house refurbished and had an independent installer put in TV points in 3 rooms.

After the work was complete, I saw there was 2 HDMI cables at each TV point. The cables all seemed to run back to a single AV area where set top boxes could be kept.

Does anyone know what sort of setup the installer was envisaging?
If a set top box was setup in the AV area, how would channels be changed?

I know some remotes use RF (e.g. Virgin Horizon) but is this now mainstream and could it work if the box was 2 rooms and a floor away?
I have also heard of HDMI-CEC that might allow the TV to control the device connected on the other end of the HDMI cable but is this control enough to allow decent channel-hopping, tv guide etc.?

thanks. I am not sure what they told the installer but they have 4 months left to go on a virgin tv contract and were thinking of going fta after that. I suspect they mentioned virgin only. I'll try and get some more details.

How could this setup even work with a virgin set top box?

They should also have installed IR repeaters, are you sure they didn't? Its how I would like to eventually have my setup. All equipment like set-top boxes, media devices, amplifiers for audio, main internet router etc etc in a "server room" and fed around the house to the different devices where you just have a tv and no other crap or clutter. IR repeaters allow you to use remotes then in the rooms

An IR repeater would make sense. I can't remember seeing any but they can be small so I will have to look again.
I will try and get the full details.

From what I saw, there was a coaxial cable coming in from outside the house (probably a Virgin connection) to the AV area. Then there were 2 HDMI cables running from this area to each TV point.

I just wanted to make sure that I wasn't missing some new technology that this sort of setup would be designed for.

Perhaps they intend using a HDMI matrix to distribute content.
