My 159 has just gone over 150K miles. In the last 10K miles it's cost me two tyres and I needed to get headlight allignment done for it to pass the nct.
Yes,so unreliable. Tyres never need to be replaced on a BMW.

My other Alfa is 21 years old, has close to 190K miles on the clock, was driven around Europe last Easter including a few laps of the nurburgring. And nothing went wrong once

Stop listening to bar stool mechanics who tell you they're unreliable because their brothers sister in laws 3rd cousin twice removed cats breeder had one years ago.

They'd be called repair bills on normal cars.

180K miles on my e46 and hasn't missed a beat.

Every single FIAT I ever owned was utterly horrible.

Its my own experience I'm drawing from and not bar stool mechanics.

You talk awful shyte on here...You're always at it, can't say a bad thing about your precious car and you jump down anyone's throat over it. Lighten up a bit.

    Indeed.

He does come across as the sort who bought an approved used car, expecting a new car.

A lot of his complains sound like rattles and noises and niggly issues that have little baring on the cars usability.

He probably had an e10 Corolla for the last 20 years before buying this yoke and isn't used to having things that can go wrong.

I'd hate to be dealing with him.

Indeed it's a premium vehicle and the naive would expect better but it's as mass produced as any other car out there. The BMW robots don't build them with love in mind or none more so than the Ford robots. Cars will give trouble and expensive cars will give expensive trouble.

If the driver wasn't an idiot he'd just put up a for sale add and get shot of it, using the warranty as a selling tool. I'd bet that that ad is some sort of scathing threat that he told the dealership he would do when they couldn't turn his used car into ad new car.

Id hardly class replacing drivers seat foam steering wheel controls engine mounts etc as routine maintenance on any car with such low mileage never mind a top of the range car like the ops BMW.

As an aside, how many times would you stick your hand in a hot toaster before you think its a bad idea?

You seem to be the one having trouble learning lessons.

( and yes, we too have an Alfa 159, 27k kms in 18 months without a problem)

    :)

The low mileage won't correspond with condition if the owner doesn't look after it. Steering wheel and handbrake switches, and boot springs all needing to be done could just be a coincidence, or just general carelessness with use. One of the drivers might have been more substantial than the BMW foam engineers had designed for. Side skirts - poor parking skills?

Bit of a coincidence? That's a bit of a reach ha ha

I could sit here all day and go on about the countless things that go wrong with E46 BMW's, yet these are supposedly ''reliable, quality cars''. An Alfa 159 and a 20 year old GTV are ''notoriously'' unreliable if people believed the rubbish you talk of, yet they also do the miles effortlessly.

FWIW, the fathers 159 is at 200k km. Oil changes and a timing belt kit are all its needed (had to do the gearbox admittedly, a known weakpoint, as its a Opel gearbox).

The thing has never left us at the side of the road once. I don't think QV is jumping down anyones throat at all, merely pointing out that his experiences have been positive. I think it is you who needs to lighten up a bit. :)

Two were puntos. One I bought and one that was supplied through work...The latter being the 1.7 diesel. Unbelievably bad. Had a loaner of a 156 and it broke down the weekend I had it.

So essentially you had 1 fiat as the other 2 weren't even yours.
The puntos I assume were mark 1s and the 156 also. So you've had these types of cars which were made 20 years ago.
Great conclusion to come to then.

I drove a BMW once and it was a mates car and it broke down. Rubbish cars, I'll never buy one again. :pac:

My first car was a Peugeot 306 which I had for 4 trouble free years until an orange light came on the dash and about 50 miles later it broke down. Put petrol in it and it started again.

    You can't trust those Peugeots!

There have been many posts about cars advertised for sale on DoneDeal that have been clocked, scrapped or descriptions that are not what they seem to be so I though you might get a giggle out of this one...

He deserves to get it sold for honesty alone?

I like the 159 but while I believe all you say she's still a pig on juice while not a terribly fast car and the emissions aren't great either.

I think your man mentioning Fiat or Alfa in the OP was more sarcasm than praise of the above makes. As in this car makes even them look good.

Diesel cars are going to kill us all.
NOx emissions much worse then any petrol.

Which engine in the 159 are you talking about?

Pretty much all of them except maybe the 2.0 jtdm.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,866 ✭✭✭✭bear1

Pretty much all of them except maybe the 2.0 jtdm.

You've really generalised the entire engine range.
The 1.9 is a very frugal car and the 2.4 considering its weight and power is also very good.
If you are going to start comparing bad fuel economy from the 3.2 jts then yeah you'd have a point but frankly the diesels were the best engines in those cars.
Can't understand the animosity for anything alfa around here.
Its as though people want to hate them just for the sake of it without having any experience.

Maybe the current owner is afraid to spend any money based on location... Whoops did I say that? :D

As much as I adore my 89 E34, it was and is still riddled with elec problems over the years I've had it from the wiper linkage and intermittent dipped beams to non starting/cutting out under light acceleration due to pins on the ECU getting corroded. It's still not the way I want it, but getting there :) I can jump into it and rely on it to start, that's a start I guess!

Just to add to the other BMWs I've had (or still have):
    • E34 520i: Central locking/ABS failed and magically came back to life. Locked itself one day and refused to open. Window put in!
    • E34 520i (TU edition): Gearbox and engine ECU failed (along with the HG)
    • E39 535i: Went on fire, pixels on dash went bananas. Climate control worked when it wanted to. Drove into my garage many years ago and currently sits with a broken fuel pump (I'd say wear and tear for that though)
    • E39 520i: Lights sporadically would go apesh*t, intermittent limp home mode, brake servo failure (water ingress I think), all doors wouldn't lock and then would magically lock all or open
    • E36 318is: You should remember how far gone this car was mechanically and electrically! :(
    • E46 330d: 2.9 facelift edition, needed various sensors dotted around the rail/high pressure pump that cost more than the car was worth. Centre fuel pump and a relay associated with it above the glovebox failed too. Windows wound down and refused to wind back up, they stayed down. Central locking worked when it wanted to. Left me stranded many times in the miserable month I drove it.

I have yet to get one without any kind of elec issue... Will the next BMW I buy be problem free? :D

I do intend to get another one some day, far off in the future though :)
