I want to get my dog x-rayed for a particular thing....just to be sure that she does not have it (hip-dysplasia).

I heard someone else had it done and paid €60....so I was prepared to pay that or even slightly more!

However, I have just been quoted over €200 for the same procedure and to be honest it seems massively excessive :(

I reckon that is about the norm. The dog needs a GA, the vet has to be paid & the BVA are also paid to score the dogs hips.

It is one of the reasons it costs more to buy puppies from health tested parents.

I think maybe what you'd heard was the fee for sending the xrays to the BVA in the UK for scoring. The cost of the xray is then on top of that.

Not sure what exactly what the price was for if you get me, as it was a second hand bit of information......

Anyway, I can't justify spending that sort of money when the dog is perfectly fine and for some reason i have got it into my head that I need to check the dog doesnt have it!!!!

Unless you are breeding from her or she appears to have hip issues I would not be putting her under a GA just to check.

Edited to add that sedation can also be used although I am not sure how much that affects the price.

She's a collie, and has a habit of "skipping" along.....and "hopping" along....on her back legs...however, she doesnt show lameness or anything like that...that why I have it in my brain and thought that a simple x-ray would just put my mind at ease!! Unfortunately, I don't have that sort of money to "spare" if you get me!

If its a reasonable fee, which I was double checking, I don't have a problem with the fee per se, its not just something that I can afford to pay - just becuase I've got this "idea" in my brain!

I can't breed from her as she has been spayed...

I appreciate your taking the time to reply by the way, so thank you

(ps, they would be sedating her apparently)

Xray price was covered by Supervet on channel 4 a couple of years ago.

Human xray machines are used constantly, so cost of machine is spread between thousands of users.

Animal x-ray machines are not in constant use, so cost of machine is spread among a much smaller number of users. Machine and bits is cheaper - £30-£40k v £80k+, but human machine is used many multiple of times a vet one would be used.

Luxating patella? Very common in small breeds, not sure about collie. Our bichon has it since she was 6 months - concerned initially, vet wasn't concerned. She's now 7. Doesn't show much sign of it anymore as we changed her exercise routine.

Ours doesn't show any lameness either - every now and then after running a certain way or jumping she'd hop / skip for a minute and then back as if nothing happened.

Was happening every couple of months. Might be best to check if that's the issue before expense of xray.

4 categories of Luxating patella - usually only category 4 and some category 3 require surgery.

    I paid (inc. vat) ...

    Sedation - 75.28
    First plate - 89.84
    2 x Extra plates 91.55
    Total - 256

That was for hips and knees so at a guess 150-200 depending on what views they need.

For comparison a thyroid ultrasound for me is €200 so €60 for an xray must be from the 1980s lol
