Creating a stoned area in back garden for table etc

    Hi,

We are looking at diy-ing an area in the back garden for dining etc.
We are thinking small stones are the cheapest option and easiest to do ourselves.

We will be putting some kind of small stone wall around the perimeter to separate it from the lawn. Or maybe use sleepers to form a small wall.

Are there any tips you would offer if you have done this yourself previously?

Would people recommend renting a small digger and/or a machine for flattening the hard layer?

Is this a doable job for people with no experience in this?

Also, would the regular weedblock found in b&q etc be sufficient? Or is a tougher variety recommended?

Go to the likes of Chadwicks or a builders centre for your supplies, b&q/ woodies charge twice as much,

New railway sleepers in Chadwicks are €25 and they don't have poisonous creosote on them, get a digger to make life easier, just keep people away from it when your using it,

    Thanks for your message.

Yeah we were looking at Turf Lawn Sales for purchasing the sleepers and stones etc. as they seem to have good prices.

Would you have an idea of how much the rental costs are for diggers? Although I can probably google that. Will check now. Thanks!

Sort of depends how big of a digger you want and how long you hire it for, try get 3 prices for everything

I'm assuming we don't need to have experience of operating one to rent one? Are they pretty easy to use?

    Thanks for your help.

The hire shop will give you a demo, just take you're time and tell people to keep away from you while your on it

Lidl have weed control barrier, it's the good stuff aswell, but if you need a lot it might work out cheaper to buy a roll of it,

Thanks for the heads-up about the lidl weed block!
Will definitely pick some of that up.

We are looking at covering an area of roughly 25ft by 12ft.

Thanks for all of the advice so far.
