We need more info, Zelda. What version of Mac OS have you updated to? What model printer do you have?

Assuming it's Sierra, are you running the latest version? It seems 10.12.1 resolved an issue with some Canon printers.

It's Sierra 10.12.3 (the latest) and the printer is a Canon Pixma (all in one) MG6350. Up to the update to Sierra the printer/scan etc. have all worked perfectly using Wifi network connection as per the standard Canon install process. I have downloaded updated drivers from Canon as recommended but the problem still exists.

The printer is displayed correctly in System Preferences and shows it as disconnected when printer is off, and in use when the printer is switched on.
However when we try to (say) print a document, the correct Window appears but when Print is selected a message appears stating Printer is disconnected!

Also when using the Scanner the same thing happens.

Have you tried simply removing and adding the printer again? This usually fixes any printer related issues I have.

In System Preferences>Printers select the printer and click the minus at the bottom.

If none of the above works, you can also reset the entire printing system - more details here: https://support.apple.com/kb/PH25565?locale=en_GB

We tried this last night but no joy it did not work, maybe the only thing now is to contact Apple and or Canon, we are a bit concerned that even if we end up buying a new printer it may not recognise it.

Apple lists our model as being o.k but it is not.

Thanks so much for your advice though really appreciate it.

    Questions:

Have you installed the Canon CUPS drivers?

Have you downloaded and used the Canon IJ Network Tool version 4.7.0?

Is your printer running the latest firmware?

Yes to all 3 in fact we have just reinstalled them again but no difference.

We cannot figure out why Sierra cannot locate the printer even though we are completely up to date with software updates etc.
What we are not sure about is how is the computer looking for printers, i.e. the MG6350 does not use AirPrint perhaps the OS is only looking for AirPrint Printers??

The printer is currently Wifi connected to the router, we have also tried wired connection and although the printer recognises both o.k., the computer still can't find it.

Wow, seems strange. I remember having a load of hassle getting a Mac set up with a Wireless HP Laserjet printer.

As a test, have you tried connecting the printer to the Mac by USB, to see if it can be found then?

Have you configured the printer manually from its built in control panel ? Check what IP address it's using and then open up a browser and try accessing it's WebGUI using the IP address. This should at least test if the computer can see the printer. If it's set to DHCP try giving it a fixed IP and then pinging it from the Terminal.

I have the MG6250 model running on Sierra, previously Yosemite and El Capitan and it's never missed a beat.

I would have intermittent problems between my iMac and Canon MX870 when the printer was connected to a router.
I've given up and now have the printer connected by USB to the iMac.
Our MacBook is on the same network and can print OK.

    Success at last!!!!

It would seem to be possibly a combination of Mac OS Sierra software update from 10.12.3 to the latest 10.12.4, included in which is "to improve compatability of Cannon Printers"

Whoppe we thought, downloaded it but nothing had changed.

Then decided to check the hard disc using first aid from Disc Utility, which found some items that could be repaired (and it did them) and some which could not.

Still no result with the Printer, so before reinstalling the complete OS, we reinstalled the original Cannon Start-up Disc, we had tried this before with no result, but this time unbelievelbly everything loaded up fine and all aspects of the printer and scanner work perfectly on wireless connection!!! so job done at last and again many thanks for all your input and suggestions.
