Price for water pump & timing belt VW Golf

    Hi there, hoping someone can help.
    I found out today my water pump is leaking on my '12 VW Golf.
    Have been told the timing belt will also have to be changed.
    Can anyone tell me what I can expect to pay?
    Also, there is only 49,000 miles on the car, should this have happened so soon?

    I bet it's the 1.6tdi. I've seen a few of these with leaking waterpumps long before the belt interval at low mileage.

    The ones that have low mileage are more susceptible to them going in my experience.

    I do about a 120-130 k a week? But would do regular short bursts.

    €449 at a main dealer for a timing belt kit, water pump and fresh coolant.

    They are prone to going on those engines. Although you have done a low mileage, the timing belt is due on those cars every 5 years/ 210k so you are due a belt soon regardless, so you may as well get the whole thing sorted.

    Where are you getting the 5 years from, it's not mentioned in the car manual, it only specifies every 210k, I have a 2011 golf 1.6 tdi main dealer serviced from new and they have never mentioned it?

    If you're getting the water pump gone it makes sense to change the belt, I'll have to query them about it at next service which will be 120k km, not too impressed with the service reception staff, not sure they have a clue about what's under the bonnet!

    I think I was just a little shocked. I've never had any issues with the car previously.
    I get it serviced, yearly and have changed the tyres when recommended.
    The mechanic said if he was changing out the water pump, he would do the timing belt also.
    I just wanted to confirm this was the case. It's a as good a time as any to go on a diet/ starvation plan! 😉
    Better to be safe, than sorry!
