    Hello all,

I am looking for a new motor and thought I would ask here for some advice and suggestions.

I have currently got an old banger that I will hold onto for running the dogs around etc. This car would be used mainly for commuting around work (about 40 mins mostly on m50 in Dublin), trips around the place in Dublin and the occasional longer drive down the country.

I was considering an 08 Volkswagen Golf or maybe a newer Polo. I also like the Mini although I understand they may not be the most popular car on here? Have also considered Ford Focus and Opel Astra but would my preference thus far would be in order of:
    1. Volkswagen Golf
    2. Mini
    3. Volkswagen Polo
    4. Opel Astra
    5. Ford Focus.

Is there anything else that should be on my list that you can think of?

    Thanks

1.4 engine in the Golf of that vintage is pretty poor, Focus isn't much better. You would really want to be looking at 1.6 to get decent performance. Don't limit yourself to 1.4 engines either, alot of 2008 onwards cars will have motor tax on the newer emissions system so they might be cheaper to tax than a 1.4 litre on the old system.

If your considering a MINI then look at the Fiat 500, it's a little bit smaller but similar kind of niche model.

Is there any specific 1.6 model you would be able to recommend?

You'll get a 2010 Auris 1.3 for your budget or bear enough it. Reliable and economical.

Yes, would also recommend an auris, they are built like a tank, if going for the 08 golf, be sure it was registered in second half of year as lower tax only applied from July onwards of that year.

You can apply to have it started from January registered vehicles onwards

1.4 Golf/Focus were not cheaper to tax after July 2008 though.

Have a look at the civic. The engine (07 anyway) is taxed at 1.3 and insured as 1.4. You should get at least 08/09 for €7k
Great car, HUGE boot, very comfy, the rear seats have a lot of space too whichbis handy for longer spins with passengers. its a little under powered but most similar 1.4s will be too. Personally im not mad about the dash but most people like it.

Insurance for running 2 cars will be very high, especially if the banger is over 15 years. Consider an estate/MPV/SUV, but you'll have to go bigger in the engine.

The Fiat Bravo in either petrol or diesel guise is worth considering. Reliable, spacious and good to drive.
