Advice Sought: Buy 171 now or wait for closer to July?

It's been a while since we bought new but are thinking of taking the plunge but a bit green when it comes to dealing with dealers....

We're in the ~30K SUV arena (Tuscon, X-rail, Kodiac, Outlander, Tiguan, 3008 etc) We have a 2007 Santa Fe to trade in (not worth very much).

Anyway, we were thinking of waiting for 172 and have started looking around. We visited Nissan today and everyone in the family really liked the X-Trail as it seems to have a good combination of spec., size etc. for our needs and has a much nicer feel to the Hyundais and Mazdas we looked at earlier.

There's an offer at the moment with 4,500 scrappage on our Santa Fe. Realistically, we'd be lucky to get 2,500 cash for it, I guess. Trouble is, this offer expires at the end of this month, meaning we'd need to plumb for a 171 plate.

Don't really have a problem with this but just wondering how these things pan out...

Is it likely Nissan will have similar 'scrappage' offers in the run up to July on both 171 ands 172 plates?

Is it worth holding out for a few months in the hope that there will be additional discounts on 171 plates as we get closer to 172? Is that a thing?

As you can gather, pretty basic and possibly nieve questions but just looking for some pointers to get best value!

    Thanks

They will have 172 offers from around the end of May I'd say, same as they did last year. Also there is a facelifted X-Trail being launched very soon so I'd wait for that too.

I think you should squeeze more of a trade in allowance from the dealer.

Your Santry Fe is one of the lucrative scrappage cars as they'll be able to trade it to another dealer for around 3k and still get a scrappage subsidy from Nissan. They Nissan dealer will probably sell your Sante Fe with a poor scrappage car worth 200 euro, to comply with the Nissan subsidy limits.

I reckon you can definitely get over the scrappage offer of 4500 euro. Try ask if they could waive the delivery fee and metallic paint and any other extra they could do to sweeten the deal. Then ask for floor mats, tank of diesel and Super Guard paint and fabric protection, which cost very little to the dealer.

Thanks, I actually asked about a refresh and salesman mentioned '2020 or even 2022' which seemed a little far-fetched! Just googled there and Id expect the facelift to be here in 2018.

The Qashqai facelift has just been released so the X-Trail which is a longer version of the Qashqai is not far behind. Take what salespeople tell you with a pinch of salt, it's their job to sell what they have in stock.

I think I read an article today that said March regs were running at practically 25% of 2016 numbers while imports are at 3 times last year numbers. Assuming many dealerships will have targets/orders based on last year's numbers, I'd want a fantastic deal on a 171!

I sold my 2007 santa fe for 4k about 6 months ago..unless yours is commerical you should get more than 2.5k for it.

Correct. New reg sales are massively down on last year.

Did you look at the Kia Sportage, Sorento and the Renaut Kadjar? There is a new Mazda CX-5 coming out which is really nice if you want to wait for that.

If you buy the Current pre-facelift X-Trail make sure you get a good deal.

Also I thought you would get much decent Kodiaq for 30k and they only have about 40 of them for the whole of this year. So will not be seeing too many of them this year.

    Live long and Prosper

    Peace and long life.

Just for info I traded a 2006 Santa Fe 2WD with 190,000 km against a 171 Tiguan and got €4,500 on trade in - VW dealer was 100% transparent - gave me what he was offered on a trade sale - showed me the 4 quotes he received.  HB Dennis Used Cars in Swords offered me €5,000 on the Santa Fe on trade in.

By the way I'm delighted with the Tiguan - it's a world of difference to drive compared to the Santa Fe and kids reckon they have more room in the back - boot is smaller and doesn't have seven seats but neither really an issue.  Three biggest improvements for me are 1. no more body roll in corners (to be expected as the Tiguan is not as high as the Santa Fe and the suspension is much firmer), 2. no more lethal wheel spin on wet roads (Santa Fe was not the best in wet conditions) and 3. a radio that actually works (Santa Fe radios were renowned for being woeful!).

Negatives so far; 1. despite the moaning about rolling in the corners the Santa Fe was fab to sit in, big seats and very comfy on long journeys the Tiguan is a different type of ride, 2. lack of road presence - the Santa Fe was higher and bigger and felt more substantial (despite the empirical NCAP data to the contrary the wife reckons she felt safer in the Santa Fe).
Overall though very happy with the switch!

Been looking at almost everything in the category. Have ended up with two quite different options, the xtrail and the Peugeot 3008. We hardly ever use the 7 seats so going down to 5 is not an issue. I know the 3008 is a good bit smaller but it's well specced and something just a little bit different to the standard charcoal and plastic interiors all the others have. We've had peugeots in the past and liked them a lot.

The 3008 is a fantastic car wit a fantastic interior and Peugeot really are making great cars now so well worth considering.

I'd fully expect this number is per dealer, if it's 40 for the entire country then those will be long sold. Assuming Ireland get's an equal proportion of all the Kodiak's built based on it's population as a % of europe's then 40 would mean only 8000 are being built for the whole continent this year..... (4 million / 740 million) :pac::pac::pac:

They also sold nearly 5000 Octavias in Ireland last year so 40 Kodiaks would be comically small......

I did 500 miles in a brand new top spec X-Trail on lots of different roads in Scotland last month. It didn't feel big when driving, was comfortable to drive even on the bigger alloys, had great visibility, the 130bhp diesel was adequate but definitely could do with more power, build quality was reasonable.

11% down year to date which although not massive is increasing as the year progresses

I agree. It's my preferred option but the rest of the family had a look at one this week (no opportunity to drive yet) and they're all coming down on the side of the X-Trail. Got to defer to wife on this as she'll be driving 90% of the time.

Though demand is such I can't imagine there being much discount available. I'll work on the rest of the crew to see if I can change minds...

Why does your wife need an SUV in that case?

Just to close this out, I shopped around a bit and got much better quotes (improved trade in value) by doing so. Ended up with a full 2k price difference on a new Nissan xtrail from two dealers just an hour apart.

Went for a 142 xtrail in the end and I'm happy with the deal so I guess that's the main thing.

I've learned that the last week in March can be a great time to buy a new car if the dealers need to make up their numbers. Maybe next time around....
