Firstly, apologies if this should be in motoring but I think it would get more responses in travel.

We're just hiring a car for portugal and I'm wondering if we should buy car excess insurance from a 3rd party rather than the hire company? Any recommendations? thanks.

Thanks for that. It is from Faro alright. Where do you collect the car from? will have toddler and baby and need carseats from there so will pay for the convenience.

It is much cheaper to use 3rd party excess insurance and I would recommend it.
However be aware that the rental company will block the amount of the excess on your credit card until the termination of the rental.
If you have damage they will take the charge from your card and you claim back from the 3rd party insurer.
So be sure that you can handle that amount on your credit card pending payment.
