NCT tech just ripped bits off a car

    Brought a car in for NCT that previously had some rust underneath the doors repaired using fibre glass and resprayed. It had passed last time no problem.

    Took the car in last week and it failed on some Secondary rust in a couple of other areas and both doors. When I was driving away I looked down in the foot well and basically the fella had ripped the previous repair job off both doors.

    When he was giving report in the centre he said rust cant be repaired like that and it needed to be welded. It's uneconomical to repair as car is 2000.

    Was a bit pissed off tbh is this a common thing?

    NCT mechanics coming in for a fair bit of stick over the last week or so. Its getting to the stage that ye will have to get your car checked by a mechanic on exiting the centres.

    They are on the lookout for bodge jobs like that, to be fair he is right, you cant just slap a load of fiberglass in and paint over it. might be time for the car to meet its maker? :)

    Im sure it wasn't the finest of jobs but the rust was gone and the hole was covered and and spray painted. NCT should be about safety and this wasn't a matter of safety.

    But yeah seems like everything is forcing old cars off the road, tax, NCT, insurance. Shame.

    If he was easily able to remove a body repair from the footwell then it wasn't worth a **** in the first place.

    If it was so ****e the door wouldnt have closed as it was right underneath it. The colour used to respray wasn't an exact match but it would not have been easy to rip off unless you got a screw driver pushed it through and pulled down.

    All in all, ****ty thing to do and didn't highlight any safety concern.

    If the metal of a car can be ripped off by hand, then your car shouldn't be on the road.

    The country is swamped in used cars that are rust free. It's not worth doing the dell boy and fibre glossing a scrapper any more.

    Sadly, it might be time to part with the car.
    If you can put your hand through a repair or remove it without an angle grinder, it's not a repair.

    It's just a superficial patch up job to make the car look OK cosmetically.

    The guy is 100% correct to fail it.

    The car's just not roadworthy by the sounds of it.

    With corrosion like that,you just don't know what way other parts of the car may be.Think of what would happen in the event of a serious accident.It might be the difference between walking away and not.

    +1. The doors aren't structural and wouldn't be a fail, but the area underneath the doors sounds like the sills which have to be sound metal.

    A patch welded on the outside of the sill would pass even if it doesn't look pretty. his would not be expensive.

    You repaired metal bodywork with fibreglass which is a bodge job which was found out and rightly so! If the body work couldn't be repaired properly then it's obviously not safe. You are in the wrong for trying to bluff them with a poor repair job so don't blame the NCT tester for finding you out.

    I agree that the tester is right.

    My own Puma has issues with rust, she's going in to be plated properly in 2 weeks. Was quoted €6/700 for it all it and there is a nice bit of work involved.

    Only for I love the car I'd scrap it.

    After the recent convictions of the fraudulent NCT staff following the RTE expose, it's heartwarming that some are doing their best to make sure cars are roadworthy.

    Whether or not his rust made it unroadworthy or the NCT fault finding in general has very little to do with road safety is another matter.

    Perhaps a proper weld job would have been a better repair.
