I had hoped to knock one more year outta my 01 Focus as I was starting a new job soon but the insurance renewal today went from 700 last year to €2,700 today :(

I'll have to find soemnting from €3,000 - €3500 as it's what I've managed to put away

No higher than 1.4 and ideally 07 and give me a few years hassle free insurance from the 15 year limit.

Petrol and ideally 4 door but if a 2 door can save a few quid I'll consider.

What's out there you'd recommend? I see a lot of Peugeot and Opel Corsas about

Will you be putting kids in it or buggies etc? Asking because you're talking about moving from a focus size to fiesta size and that will massively impact on boot space.

Have you shopped around for insurance prices?

Likely paying a few hundred quid more will be the more cost efficient option even.

Tried a broker with chill, they said the others wouldnt even quite man even as it's 16 years old

If I had managed even 1200 I'd have sucked it up for 1 year

Tried, they won't even quote me as it's 16 years old

You have called every insurance company in Ireland for quotes?

Do cars over 10 or 15 years old have a tendency to spontaneously combust or something?

That's a ridiculous hike OP. Have you tried shopping around? Ireland has gone bananas with insurance, it's like there's a mad scramble to make as much money as possible before somebody steps in and stops the madness.

Couple of nice cars on adverts.ie in your price range. I am not 100% on the insurance though, but I read an article somewhere that a Ford Fiesta Titanium 1.25 was at the higher end of the small car category. I don't know exactly how that works so maybe ring around and get some quotes.

    Opel Astra | 2007 | 1.4l | 182K km | €3,500
Pros: NCT until Feb 2018. Taxed until June 2017. Decent extras.
    Cons: 3 Door. Insurance?

    VW Polo | 2008 | 1.2l | 160K km | €3,500
Pros: NCT until Dec 2018. Decent extras.
    Cons: 3 Door.

    Hyundai i10 | 2010 | 1.2l | 172K km | €2,750 + €557 VRT.
Pros: 1 owner. Cheap insurance? Newer than other models
Cons: Not so many extras. Looks like it should be driven by your grandmother.

Others on here might be able to give you more advice on these cars, but with my limited knowledge and first glance, these are what I would be looking at with your criteria. Lots of Peugeots out there alright, I wonder why :P I am not a huge fan of them to be honest.

Xavier i was declined quote on chills 14 insurers and also the few i tried online.

I'll double check and ring them in person I'd say Monday as they will off for Paddy's day.

    Won't hold my breath

Have been able to get another 2.5k from a family member to make a 5k budget if needed but I'll see after Monday

So all the Peugeot's are problematic so I'll steer clear thanks

Thanks for a well detailed post

The i10 mentioned above is a very strong contender. I drove one of these as a rental and i was stunned by how good it behaves on the road, it's even decent on the motorway (for what it is, it's no motorway cruiser). For the money, you pretty much can't get too wrong with one of these. It should be reliable as well with not too much to go wrong.

Call a few brokers. Chill was nowhere near competitive for me.

Might be worth giving them a shout.

    I have the same car.

Insured with Kennco through munstergroup (broker) for 760 last year. Renewal is coming in at 785.

Kennco wont quote me direct but munstergroup were able to get me the above renewal.

    Worth a call - 065 684 1766

Yep, Munster a Group are on the ball.

Like another poster mentioned, Chill were utterly hopeless for me despite me having been a customer for a number of years. I eventually got a good deal through Gallivan Murphy Hooper Dolan 064 6634632.

surely this is just another scam devised by the SIMI to keep folks buying cars

I mean how is a car 10 or 12 years with a valid NCT now deemed uninsurable ?

Why does our government allow a cabal of insurance companies and SIMI collude to f**k Joe public over ?

    edit: sorry OP, rant over.

When I was looking. Alllianz like many other insurers will still continue to insure your car as it turns 15+ as I think they have to by law, but will decline new policies. Was talking to a broker about this and according to that lady when a car goes over 10 years old one insurer pulls out, 11 another couple and so on and when it gets to a 15+ car there is only one that they repersent that offer insurance. Funny enough it was the same insurer I was with through a different broker. First Ireland were the broker I was with and Patrona were the insurer. They might be worth a shout. Try a few brokers as some might offer different insurers.

The likes of chill etc are a waste of time I usually get "refusal to quote" anytime I tried it online for the craic and when they do quote their prices are mad. Ring around the companies directly and then try other brokers.

I don't see 123.ie mentioned in your post they are leagues better on price for me the last few years.

Why did your insurance rise so much?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,807 ✭✭✭Jurgen Klopp

Thanks all i plan to try ringing each one individually on Monday and please God will get something. I'd happily go for 1100 even for the year.

Cee there way no reason at all, no claims, no points no nothing man. Same details as previous year, no changes nada

Just tried 123.ie for a 16 year old car you need to have owned it for at least 8 years

    Used First Ireland.....

    €910 with Axa :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,039 ✭✭✭IrishGrimReaper

Also worth trying Liberty Insurance, based in Cavan.

910 isn't bad definitely try ring Kennco and Bank of Ireland I know their web forms won't accept but think they will on phone.
I'm with BOI and renewal was 500 on 99 Honda Accord, they might not be taking on new business on older cars but worth ringing
