    Hello guys,
I'm looking to change my car from its current 79-D reg to ZV plates.
Can anyone point me in the right direction?

    John.

It's your choice, but may I suggest you think twice before changing to a ZV.

Current ZV registrations consist of 7-digits i.e. 'ZV 00000' and aren't in keeping with old-style (pre-1987) plates. At the very least, '79 D 000' looks more 'historically correct / period correct' in that it could have been imported anytime since 1-1-87 (as opposed to current '79 D 120000+ plates).

Many people would nowadays prefer '79 D 000' over 'ZV 00000' - something to bear in mind if you are ever to consider selling on the car in the future.

This thread might help. (It's a few years old and has some conflicting answers though!).

I was actually the OP on that thread too. I tried to follow the advice on the thread but hit brick walls everywhere I went and gave up!

You need a VRT35 form. It's no issue at all to do, they may tell you it can't be done but it can. Iv done two now myself with no problems.

    Here's a VRT35 form from August 2013, don't know if it's been updated since.

I sent that form before and they sent it back to me and told me to go to my local tax office. I did that and they seemed to think I was nuts in the tax office!

Both 79 and ZV are incorrect for the period so depends on your taste. I went for ZV being imo the closest to period.

They will do, as they usually have a clue and sounds ridiculous then!
    But it can be done.

So do I go to the local tax office or vrt office/NCT centre?

The form is here, print it, fill it in and bring it into your local vehicle tax office..

I presumed that this form would be submitted to the local VRT/NCTS office as they issue registrations nowadays?!
