If two mills are supplying ewe ration with Soya as third in descending order how do you determine which of the rations have the most soya ?

My supplier claims to have about 15% Soya and Aurivo/ Nutrias's XL Ewe ration with the same first 3 in descending order has about 10% soya ...Aurivo/ Nutrias's Lactating Ewe ration has soya incl @ 20 %

15% soya means 150kg of soya per ton of ration
10% soya means 100kg of soya per ton and
20% soya means 200kg of soya per ton
Easy enough to see which has the most soya

    .

How? If both mills have Soya as 3rd in descending order and one mill is saying it has 10% Soya while the other is claiming 15 % Soya inclusion

What I am asking is how do I find out how much soya is in a ration and does it make sense that mills with soya as 3rd in their ration are claiming very different % inclusion of soya in their ration

why can't it be 3rd, if you have a ration of 45%grain, 35% something else , all three percentages of soya would be 3rd then......
nutritionalists can come up with any figure you want

What's the difference between maize gluten, distillers driedgrains ( prod'd from genetically modified maize) and maize ? Their all number 2,3,4 on a ration I often use .

Seperately, I was talking to my local Miller and they said if I wanted they could make me up a ration with ingredients of my choosing. What price competitive ingredients would people recommend, for ewes ? Often off the shelf sheep products can be price uncompetitive, example of this is teagasc said €280 is max price you should pay for lamb finisher, with rations of €240 totally acceptable but starting price of lamb finisher in biggest Miller in my area is priced at €300 -€320 a tonne.

Maize gluten-part of the maize grain (poor quality ingredient)
Distillers - dried byproduct of beer manufacturing ( decent ingredient)
    Maize - decent energy ingredient.

Try pricing some beef rations with no minerals, we did that a few years ago and kept them loaded with cobalt.

    That's one option i have around these parts, it's €268 a tonne.
second option is different mill , barley, soya bean hulls, wheat gluten, soya bean meal, distillers dried grains, maize beans. That one is €300 a tonne. A loose ration. Second mill said they'd make up whatever ingredient I wanted.

Here's a pic of the second loose ration. Both first and second are 18%

Is it for ewe ration or a hogget finisher?

What are your opinions on this 18% ewe and lamb ration. Ingredients as follows.
Rolled barley, whole oats, soya (bean) hulls, rapeseed meal, sugar cane molasses, toasted soya (bean), beat pulp and other minerals ect.

Does soya hulls count as good source of protein in third place.?
I thought they were low in protein.

All advice and opinions are greatly appreciated.

Rapeseed and the toasted soya are the main protein sources there. The hulls are mainly a fibre source, overall looks decent

Paying an extra €20 or €30 a tonne extra for a good ration is well worth it if it saves a few lambs and cuts out the hassle of feeding weak lambs extra

My choice of ingredients would be soya bean meal as number 1 followed by either maize or barley

What money would be fair and reasonable for a ration like that , and what would be 4&5. ? Just asking as I can get a Miller to mix up something like that, as long as 1 tonne minimum order.

Aurivo are doing that ration but do not seem to be really promoting it. I think it is €290 delivered. I am paying as much for a lesser ration ( in big bags ) from AW Ennis

Anything from €300 to €325. It can depend sometimes when miller is paid

Distillers dried grain, maize gluten, soya hulls are a few off the top of my head

This is the list of ingredients for the aurivo nut. It's 290 a tonne which isn't bad. Happy with it so far as it has definitely made a difference.

That's bulk delivered. Never seen it or the excel ewe and lamb which is the one below that in bags. Just see the standard ewe and lamb in bags in The local aurivo.

Roughly what price off the shelf is that ?

Things working out well here with meal and straw only diet. Only downside is the sheep appear lost not having something to graze at all day long and were completely eating all their bedding, so had to reintroduce the ring feeders filled with straw instead of meal. If straw prices keep up next winter, would that put pressure on your system ?

Don't really understand what you mean by that, it is expensive but convenient.
I bed the ewes at a rate of a well packed 4 by 4 bale straw to 200 ewes per day.
Considering I'm planning on 50 ewes next year instead of 550,straw price won't put much pressure on my system.
I'm paying a bit less than €300/ton delivered in 25kg bags for that ration......again 25kg bags for convenience
    Minimum 5 ton delivery

thats one hell of a minimum delivery for pallets!

i get big bags delivered here, saves on having to tidy all the empty bags and the string too

Apologies, meant silage. Find their eating a lot more straw even though their getting correct amount of meal. have to leave a round bale of straw with them in a feeder to stop them eating all the bedding. They appear to be eating through straw at the same rate as a bale of silage.
But other then that, I'm happy with the meal only experiment.
You thinking of downsizing rangler ?

They'll deliver less alright, only not at the price I'm paying, but they seem to do a few small deliveries at the end of the lambing without increasing the price.
